SBLive’s Top 25 Washington high school football rankings: A midseason Vancouver invasion happening as Mountain View (No. 23), Skyview (No. 25) crack the lineup

High school football games continued in Washington last weekend, marking the first full fall season in two years. Here is the updated statewide all-classification SBLive Top 25 Washington after Week 5:

WASHINGTON FOOTBALL ALL-CLASSIFICATION POWER RANKINGS

1. GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN EAGLES 5-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Bellarmine Prep (4A)

Last result: 56-12 win over Curtis (4A)

Last ranking: No. 1

Ranking rationale: First, the Eagles gave up first points (FG) to Puyallup. Then, they give up a touchdown to Curtis? They’re in trouble (enter sarcasm).

2. LAKE STEVENS VIKINGS 3-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Mariner (4A)

Last result: 40-6 win over Snohomish (3A)

Last ranking: No. 2

3. GONZAGA PREP BULLPUPS 4-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at No. 16 Central Valley (4A)

Last result: On bye (56-21 win over Mead on Sept. 24)

Last ranking: No. 3

Ranking rationale: Not sure the Bullpups wanted a week off, but they will surely be rested and well-prepared for 4A GSL showdown with Bears.

4. BELLEVUE WOLVERINES 5-0 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Newport of Bellevue (3A)

Last result: 49-0 win over Mercer Island (3A)

Last ranking: No. 4

Ranking rationale: The scary thing about this particular team is its balance. Everybody who touches the football seems to get into the end zone.

5. O’DEA FIGHTING IRISH 3-1 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. No. 15 Eastside Catholic (3A)

Last result: 35-13 win over then-No. 17 Seattle Prep (3A)

Last ranking: No. 5

Ranking rationale: Essentially, this is likely for the fall Metro League championship after the Irish beat this team in spring league semifinals.

6. SUMNER SPARTANS 5-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Curtis (4A)

Last result: 42-0 win over Bethel (4A)

Last ranking: No. 6

Ranking rationale: Spartans in softer part of 4A SPSL schedule, but are doing what they need to do – posting shutouts and evolving pass game.

7. KENNEWICK LIONS 4-0 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at No. 11 Kamiakin (4A)

Last result: 42-7 win over Hanford (3A)

Last ranking: No. 7

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Inglemoor (4A)

Last result: 16-10 win over then-No. 18 Mount Si (4A)

Last ranking: No. 8

9. UNION TITANS 4-1 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 7 at Battle Ground (4A)

Last result: 47-27 win over Evergreen of Vancouver (3A)

Last ranking: No. 9

Ranking rationale: News flash – if you want to take down the Titans, remember – don’t throw it in the direction of Notre Dame commit Tobias Merriweather.

10. YELM TORNADOS 5-0 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 7 at Gig Harbor (3A)

Last result: 40-6 win over Capital (3A)

Last ranking: No. 10

Ranking rationale: Paying constant attention to WR/DB/KOR Kyler Ronquillo is tiring, especially when you know he is bound to break off a big play in any phase.

11. KAMIAKIN BRAVES 5-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. No. 7 Kennewick (3A)

Last result: 39-6 win over Southridge (3A)

Last ranking: No. 11

Ranking rationale: The only thing likely standing in the Braves’ way of an unblemished MCC run is their rivals, who should be the sternest physical test yet.

12. TUMWATER THUNDERBIRDS 3-1 (2A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Shelton (3A)

Last result: On bye (34-0 win over W.F. West on Sept. 24)

Last ranking: No. 12

Ranking rationale: As if the Thunderbirds need any more street credibility as 2A powerhouse, they have 4A champion Camas coming to town next week.

13. EASTLAKE WOLVES 5-0 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Skyline (3A)

Last result: 48-8 win over Redmond (4A)

Last ranking: No. 13

Ranking rationale: A lot of deserved attention goes to TE/LB Griffin Miller – a leading 4A KingCo MVP candidate – but CB/WR/K Noah Weintraub has been big.

14. MARYSVILLE-PILCHUCK TOMAHAWKS 5-0 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Mount Vernon (3A)

Last result: 49-15 win over then-No. 19 Ferndale (3A)

Last ranking: No. 15

Ranking rationale: Moves past Eastside Catholic after defeating – no, blowing out – two Power-20 opponents in back-to-back weekends. Scary legit team.

15. EASTSIDE CATHOLIC CRUSADERS 3-1 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at No. 5 O’Dea (3A)

Last result: 35-13 win over then-No. 6 Seattle Prep (3A)

Last ranking: No. 14

Ranking rationale: Loss at Valor Christian during crazy COVID-19 pause seems like eons ago – this defense, especially the linebackers, has been lights-out.

16. CENTRAL VALLEY BEARS 4-1 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. No. 3 Gonzaga Prep (4A)

Last result: 27-24 win over University (3A)

Last ranking: No. 16

Ranking rationale: Uneven stretches in close victories doesn’t instill unabated confidence, but all of that rendered pointless if they upend Bullpups.

Up next: Oct. 8 at Mead (3A)

Last result: 14-0 win over Chiawana (4A)

Last ranking: No. 20

Ranking rationale: This isn’t just a team powered by an up-tempo, pass-happy offense. Richland showed it can get dirty in the defensive trenches, too.

18. MOUNT SPOKANE WILDCATS 3-1 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Ferris (3A)

Last result: 27-0 win over Lewis & Clark (4A)

Last ranking: No. 21

Ranking rationale: Pretty impressive feat for COVID-19-depleted Wildcats to win convincingly down half of their starters – and all defensive coaches.

19. GLACIER PEAK GRIZZLIES 4-1 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Kamiak (4A)

Last result: 49-20 win over Mariner (4A)

Last ranking: No. 22

Ranking rationale: Despite what happened against Marysville-Pilchuck (49-14 loss) more than a week ago, Grizzlies still a talented, diverse group.

20. LINCOLN OF TACOMA 3-2 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 7 at Bonney Lake (3A)

Last result: 48-14 win over Mount Tahoma (3A)

Last ranking: No. 23

Up next: Oct. 8 at Mount Tahoma (3A)

Last result: 19-14 win over Liberty (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 vs. Kiona-Benton (1A)

Last result: 70-12 win over Wahluke (1A)

Last ranking: No. 25

Ranking rationale: Winners of 68 of their past 69 games – against teams at all levels – Knights just biding time until the important matchups come to light.

23. MOUNTAIN VIEW THUNDER 4-1 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 7 vs. Camas (4A)

Last result: 20-17 win over Kelso (3A)

Last ranking: Unranked

Ranking rationale: Firmly in control of 3A GSHL race after last week’s impressive road victory, now it’s trying to beat Papermakers for first time since 2007.

24. SEATTLE PREP PANTHERS 3-2 (3A)

Up next: Oct. 8 at Ballard (3A)

Last result: 35-13 loss to No. 5 O’Dea (3A)

Last ranking: No. 17

Ranking rationale: Let’s be honest, 95 percent of the teams in Washington would likely lose to O’Dea and Eastside Catholic; team still skilled and talented.

25. SKYVIEW STORM 4-1 (4A)

Up next: Oct. 7 at Kelso (3A)

Last result: 35-12 over Prairie

Last ranking: Unranked

Ranking rationale: Still a team built for a long run with a big offensive line and two productive but different-style running backs – Jaydin Knapp and Gabe Martin.
