After prolonged offseason with lots of ‘clock-watching,’ Mercer Island’s leadership proved to be a separator this spring

With no Washington high school state basketball playoffs in 2021, teams don’t have much to play for, right?

Think again.

Mercer Island basketball senior captains Tyler Butson and David Pickles, as well as head coach Gavin Cree, joined SBLive Washington’s high school basketball media days to go in-depth on the 3A KingCo, the Islanders’ preparation for the season under pandemic circumstance, how it feels to beat Bellevue and much more. Mercer Island finished 6-2 in the condensed season and capped its season off with a 56-54 win at Bellevue hours after the following interview was conducted.
