Photos: Gonzaga Prep opens 2021 football season with win over Mt. Spokane at brand new Union Stadium

MEAD – Ryan McKenna rushed for 112 yards and threw a touchdown pass to lead Gonzaga Prep to a 10-7 victory over Mt. Spokane on Saturday in the 2021 season opener for both teams. The game was played at Mead School District’s brand new Union Stadium.

In a ground-and-pound game, the Bullpups rushed for 201 yards with Jaden Ortega accounting for 79 yards on 16 carries. Evan Duchense’s 24-yard field goal in the second quarter proved to be the difference.

Mt. Spokane QB Connor Maril scored the Wildcats’ lone touchdown on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter. Maril finished with 85 yards of total offense while junior Tyler Alm rushed 10 times for 63 yards.

Gonzaga Prep came into the game ranked No. 17 in the state in SBLive’s preseason Top 50, while Mt. Spokane is ranked No. 46.

Gonzaga Prep is scheduled to host Lewis & Clark on Friday, March 5, while Mt. Spokane is scheduled to host Cheney.
