Henry Gargus named WSBCA player of the year; Donnie Lindgren, Mike Archer Washington state baseball coaches of the year

Davis High School first baseman Henry Gargus has one of the purest baseball swings you will find.

It led him to winning many home run contests.

It helped land him a scholarship to Stanford University.

And on Saturday, it earned him the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association all-classification player of the year for 2019.

It was an action-packed weekend in Yakima, starting Saturday with a round of all-state games (which Gargus played in a few innings before heading off to make the lineup for the Yakima Valley Pippins, a collegiate wooden-bat team).

On Saturday night, Gargus (.509 batting average, 13 XBH, 20 SB as a senior) was honored at a gathering in the Yakima Convention Center.

Also, Moses Lake’s Donnie Lindgren (big-school) and Selah’s Mike Archer (small-school) were selected as the WSBCA state coaches of the year. Both led their respective schools to state championships this spring.

North Mason’s Bishop Bielec was named the state assistant coach of the year in 2019.

For a second consecutive year, the all-state baseball festivities were combined with the hall-of-fame presentation.

Five coaches, including former longtime University of Washington coach Ken Knutson, were introduced as the 2019 class.

Knutson spent 17 seasons as the Huskies coach. He now works in Arizona as a throwing coordinator for the Cleveland Indians.

Other hall-of-fame inductees included Centralia’s Rex Ashmore, (also coached at Adna; Toutle Lake’s Kevin Heimbigner (also coached at Odessa, Naselle and Ilwaco); Kittitas’ Merle Watkins; and Joe Ross, a former scout for the Seattle Mariners who was an assistant at both UW and Washington State.

The final pair of all-state games resumed Sunday in Yakima.
