7 questions with Ethan Smith, Union High School star and 2019 GSHL co-player of the year

Union High School basketball guard Ethan Smith, who was recently named the 4A Greater St. Helens League co-player of the year, is one of the best shooters in the state of Washington. But the 6-foot senior guard feels like he’s far more than a shooter.

Smith, who holds Union’s all-time records for 3-pointers made in a season and a single game, has the Titans in the pole position heading into the Washington high school basketball playoffs. With a 21-0 record the Titans are ranked No. 1 in the 4A WIAA RPI, ahead of defending state champion Gonzaga Prep.

We recently caught up with Smith and asked him seven questions:

How would you describe your game?

Most people label me as a shooter but I would describe myself as more. I am a shooter but I can do other things as well like attacking and finishing or attacking and dishing it off.

What are your goals for the season?

Team goal: My goal for this team is to win the state championship. That’s our goal every year and I think that we have done a good job this year setting ourselves up for that opportunity.

Individual goal: My goal for this team was to win league MVP and get selected for an all-state team while leading my team to the (Tacoma) Dome. I have already done one of these things so now I am focused on the Dome.

How would you describe your coach?

My coach, Blake Conley, is my favorite coach that I have ever had. The way he pushes us and holds us to high standards is unmatched. He’s by far the most competitive person that I have ever met and I think this has rubbed off on the team which is a good thing.

Who is your favorite player?

CJ McCollum. I have to go with a somewhat hometown guy. Plus just the way he plays and how he is so smooth with everything that he does impresses me.

Who was your toughest matchup this season?

I think our toughest matchup this year was Skyview. The game had an unreal atmosphere as well as just a good matchup. They are probably our biggest rival and it was such a great game to be a part of.

What is your favorite gym in the state to play in?

My favorite gym to play in is by far the Union gym. There’s no place like home especially when the stands are packed in a big rivalry game. The atmosphere is always great.

What are your aspirations as a player?

To get a college scholarship and play college basketball. I don’t know where yet but this is my number one goal.
