Why did you get into coaching?
I got into coaching because I had such a great experience growing up playing sports, that I wanted to give back the same to other high school athletes. I love competition, hard work, team camaraderie, and the atmosphere that comes with sports. I want my athletes to leave my program knowing I gave them the best experience possible, taught them valuable life lessons, and memories they can hold onto forever.
Outside of your current team/program, what are your coaching aspirations?
My focus currently is on Battle Ground Basketball. Down the road I would like to pursue an administration job. I am currently a year away from my administration license to become either an athletic director or principal.
Who is your coaching mentor?
When I first got into coaching, Trevor Person helped me build my skills and showed me how to build the foundation of a program. We spent a lot of time working together on and off the court. Currently, someone who is not on my staff that I work with quite a bit is Jason Buffum. Him and I talk daily about basketball, bouncing ideas off of each other frequently. On my staff directly, Gregg Kalian has been an amazing assistant and mentor for me. We have known each other for 20 years and even played for him during youth basketball. Lastly, Hall of Fame Battle Ground Coach, Butch Blue, has been a great influence throughout this season. Him and I have talked X’s and O’s, philosophies, and much more.
What is your best coaching resource?
I really enjoy going to coaching clinics throughout the year. I tend to get a handful of great ideas, from team building, to X’s and O’s. Twitter is an excellent tool I also use. There are a lot of great coaches to connect with and bounce ideas off of each other.
Who is the best coach you’ve matched x/o’s with?
Coaches that I have matched up against who are elite; Blake Conley and Matt Gruhler. Both have big time programs and run their stuff really well.
Who is the best player you’ve coached?
Kaden Perry is a phenomenal player. Once in a generation type guy. He will be playing for a major college in his future.
