Coaches Spotlight: Matt Gruhler Skyview

Scorebook Live’s Dan Dickau visits with Matt Gruhler, head coach at Skyview High School.

Hometown: Portland, OR

HS/College: Central Catholic HS (OR), Saint Martin’s College

Athlete in HS/College: 3 years varsity in HS, 5 years in college (1 redshirt year)

Coaching career: 15 years coaching, 9th year as head coach – 3 at Hockinson HS and this is my 6th at Skyview.

Why did you get into coaching?

I fell in love with the game at a young age, and enjoy being around it. As I looked back on my career, I realized that coaches had a huge impact in my life in a positive way, and I wanted to try to have a positive impact on young people.  At the same time, I love using basketball to teach young men how to be a part of something bigger than yourself and put others first

Outside of current team/program what are your coaching aspirations?

None.  I hope to be at Skyview as long as possible.

Who is your coaching mentor?

Bob Benson – having him as my varsity assistant has been a blessing.  He has been a coach for over 30 years and many of them as a head coach.  He is the first person I go to when I have questions.

Best coaching resource?

I love the stuff I can learn on Twitter from other coaches.  I feel like there are a ton of great resources on leadership, X’s and O’s and team building on twitter.

Best coach you’ve matched x/o’s with?

Blake Conley – Union, Bill Bakamus-Mark Morris, Dave Long- Columbia River.

 Best player you’ve coached?

Alex Schumacher – currently

Josh Hall – Hockinson HS 2010-11

Best player you’ve seen at the HS level in WA?

Michael Porter
