CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Freshman running back Nikzavyer Rice rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries to lead Waco La Vega to a 48-13 win over Miller on Saturday.
The Pirates were looking to get back on track after back-to-back losses to Austin LBJ and to Argyle, and they leaned on their big-play offense in this game. Waco La Vega quarterback Robert Prescott connected on several big plays to wide receiver Mehki Rice, and Miller had no answer for freshman RB Rice, who averaged 16.2 yards per carry.
Quarterback Jaeyden Brown, running back Ethan Greenwood and wide receiver Lonnie Adkism kept Miller (3-2) in the game in the first half as they trailed just 21-13 at halftime. But turnovers and explosive plays from Waco La Vega (3-2) turned it into a rout in the second half.
Waco La Vega will look to stay hot next week with the undefeated Stephenville Yellow Jackets coming to town to open district play. Miller has a bye week before hosting the Alice Coyotes, who are hot following back-to-back wins after starting the season 0-3.
