Texas high school football Week 2 top stars, best performances

From Leander QB Mason Shorb (423 passing yards, 5 TDs) to King Houston RB Jerrell Wimbley (270 rushing yards, 3 TDs), there were dozens of standout high school football performances across the state of Texas during the second weekend of the 2021 season. Here’s a look at Texas’ top stars for Sept. 2-4.

Mason Shorb, Leander QB: In Friday’ game against Anderson, Shorb was 21-of-30 for 423 yards with 5 TDs in a 57-54 win.

Rene Galvan, Sinton QB: Galvan rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two more to lead the Pirates to an impressive 50-12 road win over Carroll on Thursday night. (Rene Galvan featured photo above by Clara Sandoval)

Andrew Martinez, Eastwood El Paso QB: Friday’s game against Hanks saw Martinez go 14-of-22 for 410 yards with 4 TDs in a 75-27 win.

Zane Zeinert, Rosebud-Lott QB: In Friday’s game against Wortham, Zeinert went 24-of-37 for 347 yards with 1 TD in a 41-8 win. 

EJ Ezar, Rudder QB: Rudder went 17-of-21 for 352 yards with 1 TD in a 44-7 win over the El Paso Americas Trail Blazers on Friday.

Kaden Anderson, Southlake Carroll QB: Anderson was 16-of-28 passing for 354 yards and two TDs and he added a rushing TD in Carroll’s 36-35 win over Rockwall-Heath.

Bishop Davenport, Spring QB: Davenport passed for 306 yards and 5 TDs and ran for 75 yards and two more TDs in Spring’s 49-0 win over Klein Oak.

Cergio Perez, Garland QB: Perez was 23-of-30 for 350 yards and 6 TDs in Garland’s 55-3 win over Richardson.

Nathan Greek, Ferris QB: Greek went 21-of-28 for 298 yards and four TDs and added a rushing TD in Ferris’ 43-13 win over Fort Worth Benbrook.


Seth Davis, Katy RB: Davis rushed for 178 yards and 3 TDs in Katy’s 42-7 win over Cypress Woods.

Jose Guardado, Riverside RB: Guardado rushed 6 times for 220 yards with 2 TDs in a 54-7 win over Cathedral.

Dominic Aguilar, Fort Stockton QB: In a 46-10 win against Alpine, Aguilar went 6-of-10 for 80 yards passing and rushed 14 times for 231 yards and 5 TDs.

Jerrell Wimbley, King Houston RB: Wimbley rushed 21 times for 270 yards and 3 TDs in a 35-27 win over Strake Jesuit.

Epi Hinojosa, Calallen RB: Hinojosa rushed 8 times for 147 yards and 3 TDs in a 55-20 win over Jourdanton.

Damien Martinez, Lewisville: Martinez rushed 21 times for 255 yards and 5 TDs in Lewisville’s 53-24 win over Timber Creek.

Ashton Jeanty, Frisco Lone Star RB: Jeanty rushed 16 times for 157 yards and 3 TDs and caught four passes for 82 yards and another TD in Lone Star’s 45-35 loss to Aledo.


Cameron Jones, Birdville WR: Jones caught 4 passes for 193 yards and 3 TDs in a 49-24 win against Haltom.

Deuce McGregor, Chapel Hill WR: McGregor caught 5 passes for 150 yards and 1 TD in 35-15 win over Livingston.

Kalen Barefield, Yorktown WR: Barefield caught 5 passes for 95 yards and 1 TD in a 49-17 win over Weimar.

Dylan Nelson, Coppell WR: Nelson rushed 4 times for 50 yards and caught 7 passes for 98 yards in a 41-55 loss to Prestonwood Christian.


Anthony Evans, Lake Travis WR/RB: Evans picked up a loose ball after being kicked around by players on both teams following a muffed punt and rumbled untouched down the sideline for a 70-yard punt return touchdown in Lake Travis’ 52-20 win over Converse Judson.

Emanuel De Los Santos, San Antonio Harlan: De Los Santos drilled a game-winning 32-yard field goal just before the clock expired to lift Harlan to a 34-33 win over Laredo United.

TayShawn Wilson, Katy Mayde Creek WR: Wilson returned a punt 63 yards for a TD and caught a TD pass in Katy Mayde Creek’s 35-14 win over Cy Lakes.
