Top stars, best stats in opening week of 2021 Texas high school football season

From San Antonio Southside quarterback Richard Torres (302 yards, 8 TDs) to Ford running back Jadonavan Williiams (253 yards rushing, 4 TDs), there were dozens of standout high school football performances across the state of Texas during the opening weekend of the 2021 season. Here’s a look at Texas’ top stars for Aug. 26-28.

Drew Alexander, Yorktown QB: Alexander threw for 462 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-36 loss to St. Paul.

Kaden Anderson, Southlake Carroll QB: Anderson threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to lead Southlake Carroll to a 45-21 win over Highland on Thursday night.

Bo Baker, Bells WR/RB: Baker carried the ball 18 times for 209 yards and a touchdown in Bells’ 41-34 loss to Whitesboro.

Kendrick Bradley, Klein Forest RB: Bradley rushed 28 times for 274 yards and four TDs to lead Klein Forest to a 28-12 win over Goose Creek Memorial.

Landen Chambers, Fossil Ridge RB: Chambers carried the ball 33 times for 208 yards to help lead Fossil Ridge to a 42-41 win over Azle on Thursday.

Elias Duncan, Andress (El Paso) QB: Duncan, a junior, racked up 153 total yards — 84 rushing and 69 passing — and scored three rushing touchdowns on just seven carries to lead Andress to a 42-13 win over Chapin.

Jay Fair, Rockwall-Heath WR: Fair caught six passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in Rockwall-Heath’s 56-49 win over Timber Creek on Thursday.

Rene Galvan, Sinton QB: Galvan compiled 318 total yards — 162 passing and 156 rushing — and accounted for six touchdowns to lead Sinton to a 57-12 win over Orange Grove.

Dion Green, Victoria West WR/RB: Green rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 75 yards in Victoria West’s 33-29 loss to Lockhart.

Montrel Hatten, Carthage WR: Hatten caught 10 passes for 206 yards and a TD in Carthage’s 27-24 win over Crosby.

Epi Hinojosa, Calallen RB: Calallen used a strong offensive showing to beat Gregory Portland 41-19 Friday night in the 2021 Texas high school football season opener for both teams. Calallen running back Epi Hinojosa was the star, rushing for 313 yards on 20 carries.

Josh Hoover, Rockwall-Heath QB: Hoover was 19-of-24 for 406 yards and five TDs to lead Rockwall-Heath to a 56-49 win over Timber Creek on Thursday.

Cade Klubnik, Austin Westlake QB: Klubnik threw for 226 yards and three TDs and rushed for 58 yards and another touchdown to lead Austin Westlake to a 54-13 win over Temple.

Keldrick Luster, Frisco Liberty QB: Luster threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 45 yards and three more TDs and scored the game-winning two-point conversion with eight seconds left to lift Frisco Liberty to a 50-49 win over Frisco Reedy.

Tray’vian McCoy-Gay, Round Rock RB: McGoy-Gay rushed 13 times for 245 yards and four touchdowns to lead Round Rock to a 69-17 win over Midway.

Mabrey Mettauer, The Woodlands QB: Mettauer, a sophomore, was 20-of-27 for 207 yards and three touchdowns, plus a rushing TD in The Woodlands’ 48-42 win over Langham Creek.

Zane Obregon, Splendora RB: Obregon carried the rock 34 times for 201 yards to help lead Splendora to a 27-6 win over North Forest.

AJ Padgett, Frisco Reedy QB: Padgett threw for 186 yards and three TDs and ran for 55 yards and a TD in Frisco Reedy’s 50-49 loss to Frisco Liberty.

Jaquaize Pettaway, Langham Creek WR: Pettaway hauled in five passes for 155 yards and a touchdown in Langham Creek’s 48-42 loss to The Woodlands.

Jacob Porter, Timber Creek QB: Porter was 31-of-44 for 400 yards and five TDs in a 56-49 loss to Rockwall-Heath.

Erik Ruiz, Laredo Nixon RB: Ruiz rushed nine times for 136 yards and a touchdown in Laredo Nixon’s 28-13 rivalry win over Martin.

Dylan Sanchez, Lampasas QB: Sanchez was 26-of-42 for 365 yards and seven TDs in a 58-55 loss to Brownwood.

Mason Shorb, Leander Rouse QB: Shorb was 23-of-31 for 393 yards and five TDs in a 44-7 win over Burnet.

Richard Torres, San Antonio Southside QB: Torres was 13-of-17 for 302 yards and eight touchdowns — including seven in the first half — in San Antonio Southside’s 62-14 win over Brownsville Lopez.

Trenton White, Lubbock Monterey RB: White rushed 27 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns in Lubbock Monterey’s 32-27 win over Odessa.

Jadonavan Williams, Ford (Quinlan) RB: Williams rushed 22 times for 253 yards and four touchdowns to lead Ford to a 47-33 win over Whitney.

Jkoby Williams, Beckville RB: Williams rushed 19 times for 251 yards and three touchdowns to lead Beckville to a 50-39 win over Joaquin on Thursday.

Jerrell Wimbley, King (Houston) RB: Wimbley rushed 11 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead King to a 53-0 win over Cypress Falls on Thursday.

Xavier Wishert, Jim Ned RB: Wishert carried the ball 12 times for 220 yards and a touchdown to lead Jim Ned to a 42-7 win over Ballinger.
