Friday’s scheduled Metro League high school football showdown between Mountainside and Jesuit, which was scheduled to be played at Mountainside High School, was canceled because of COVID-19 complications.

According to an email sent Wednesday afternoon by Mountainside High School via ParentSquare, “this Friday’s varsity football home game against Jesuit High School has been canceled due to COVID-19 illnesses and/or quarantines of players on the team. Through our contact tracing of the positive cases, the students exhibited symptoms prior to Saturday’s (Oct. 16) Homecoming dance, and not after the dance.”

Jesuit will get a 1-0 forfeit victory as a result of the cancellation.

With the forfeit win, the league-leading Crusaders improve to 5-0 in Metro League play and to 7-1 overall. Mountainside, which was riding a four-game win streak, moved to 3-2 in Metro League games and to 4-4 overall.

The Mavericks, if they are cleared to play, will finish their regular-season schedule Oct. 29, when they travel to Aloha for a Metro League game starting at 7 p.m. Jesuit will finish its regular-season slate with a 7 p.m. Metro League home contest against Sunset on Oct. 29.
