Dom Montiel, who recently received an offer from Portland State, has 5 TD passes to lift Marshfield over Rainier

No. 1 Marshfield 43, Rainier 16

Dom Montiel passed for five touchdowns to power the host Pirates (7-0) to the victory over the Class 3A Columbians (5-1).

One day after stating on Twitter that he has received a scholarship offer from FCS Portland State, Montiel completed 10 of 12 passes for 188 yards against the Columbians, who traveled from their school one mile from the Columbia River to Pete Susick Stadium, about one mile from Coos Bay.

Pierce Davidson was on the receiving end of two of Montiel’s scoring throws, and Miguel Velazquez had one touchdown receiving and one on a 74-yard run. DJ Daugherty and Mason Pederson also had touchdown catches.

The Pirates’ defensive highlights included an interception by Daugherty; a sack, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup by Mitchell George; and strong play in the middle by Ezra Waterman against the Columbians’ power running game.
