Estacada stays hot, cruises to 44-14 win over No. 8 La Grande

By Dave Ball

The Estacada football team defeated another top-10 foe, traveling to La Grande and coming away with a convincing 44-14 win Thursday night.

“This was a tough four-game stretch, and our team rose to the occasion each week,” Rangers coach Andy Mott said.

Estacada bolted to a 22-7 halftime lead after holding the host Tigers to 14 first-quarter yards.

“The defense flew around all night and didn’t allow any big plays while making some huge fourth-down and goal-line stops,” Mott said.

Linebackers Jake Behrman and Waylon Riedel led the defense with six solo tackles apiece, and Tucker Jackson recovered a fourth-quarter fumble that set up Estacada’s final points.

Quarterback Cory James led the Rangers offense with five carries for 143 yards — 86 of those coming on a touchdown breakaway in the third quarter.

“We called an option play on third-and-short,” Mott said. “The defense collapsed on the dive back, and Cory pulled the ball and was to the second level before they knew who had the ball. It was a huge play that blew the game open for us.”

Hunter McDonald added 84 yards on the ground, and Riedel had 71 yards and scored twice.

The No. 4 Rangers start the Tri-Valley schedule next Friday at home against rival Gladstone.
