Estacada cruises past Stayton in opener: ‘Our balance on offense was the big highlight’

By Dave Ball

The Estacada Rangers steamrolled past Stayton 38-8 in their season opener Friday night, making four trips to the end zone in the first half to put the game away early.

The Rangers outgained Stayton by more than 300 yards, led by quarterback Cory James, who completed 6 of 11 passes for 96 yards to go with 11 rushes for 80 yards.

Caleb McDonald caught a 47-yard touchdown pass to put the Rangers up 24-0 midway through the second quarter. Teammate Waylon Riedel found the end zone twice and led the defense with 11 tackles — one for loss.

“Our balance on offense was the big highlight,” Rangers coach Andy Mott said. “After a rough opening series, our offense scored TDs on four consecutive possessions.”

Stayton quarterback Cody Leming completed 10 of 18 passes for 68 yards — most of that total coming on the last play of the game, a 54-yard touchdown strike to Owen O’Connor.
