The Spartans scored on their first drive of the season, but after that it was almost all Hood River Valley in the Eagles’ home victory in the season opener for both teams.
Hillsboro launched a six-minute drive to open the game, and Jaden Echeverria’s rushing touchdown put the Spartans on top 6-0. Trenton Hughes, the first-team all-Northwest Oregon Conference East kick returner last season, returned the Spartans’ kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown that started the Eagles on a closing 42-0 scoring run.
The Eagles’ Shaw Burns carried 11 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass from Hughes (8 of 12 passing, 139 yards), one of two the senior threw, the other going to Joey Frazier (three receptions, 56 yards). Hughes rushed for 76 yards and a score.
Spartans coach Dan Shuff said his team, which starts one senior, pieced together good offensive drives after the first possession, but he said they typically ended with Hillsboro making a misstep.
“Inexperience definitely showed up early but the kids didn’t give up,” Shuff said, “so we can build off that.”
The Eagles led 28-6 at halftime.
