COVID cancels 3 more football openers; Sandy awarded forfeit victory over Reynolds

By René Ferrán

COVID issues reared themselves again overnight, causing the cancellation Friday morning of three football games.

Tonight’s Mt. Hood Conference opener between Sandy and Reynolds will not be played because of a COVID case within the Reynolds program. This is the second MHC game this week canceled because of COVID concerns, following Gresham and Clackamas.

The Pioneers will receive a forfeit win in the conference standings, joining Clackamas at 1-0 without having played a down.

In Southern Oregon, North Medford saw its game with Del Norte, Calif., canceled one day after it was moved from Medford to Crescent City, Calif, because of poor air conditions due to the wildfires in the region.

A nonconference matchup between Corbett and Madras also is off after an outbreak in the Cardinals program.

“It’s a huge bummer,” said White Buffalos coach Kurt Taylor. “We practiced really well all week and were very excited to play.”
