‘Proven leader’ Dawson Muggy goes from receiver to starting quarterback for 2-time defending 5A champion Thurston

Two years ago, when Thurston made its run to the first of consecutive Class 5A state championships, Dawson Muggy toiled away as the JV quarterback, limiting his time playing in the varsity secondary.

After leading 5A in interceptions as a junior and being named to the all-state first team, Muggy will return under center this season, winning a four-way competition to replace two-time all-state quarterback Cade Crist.

Muggy will get the start Friday night against Churchill after starting all last season at wide receiver.

“We have a lot of faith in Dawson,” Colts coach Justin Starck said. “He has a fair amount of quarterback experience, but it was really the veteran leadership he provides. We wanted a senior leader, and he’s played in two state championship games. He understands how to compete.”

Sophomore Darien Witham, who got most of the first-team reps in the fall 7-on-7 league, also will see action, Starck said.

“We’ve got a couple of quarterbacks in Darien and (junior) Alex (Boring) who have a bright future,” Starck said. “But in this moment, we went with the proven leader.”
