Preseason A Montana high school football rankings: Laurel is defending champion, but Hamilton gets nod for top spot

SBLive surveyed the Montana high school ‘A’ football landscape, and compiled a comprehensive look at the state entering the 2021 fall season.

Here are the preseason A Top 10 rankings:

1. Hamilton

2020 record: 10-1

Broncs return top QB Tyson Rostad for senior campaign to build on semifinal run from a year ago.

2. Laurel

2020 record: 9-1

Defending champs have been to back-to-back state title games, but have some holes to fill in 2021.

3. Billings Central Catholic

2020 record: 7-1

Standard of consistency – team has won seven games or more every season for nearly two decades.

4. Beaverhead County

2020 record: 7-2

Second seed from the West in 2020 must find ways to get ball to WR Jon Kirkley.

5. Custer County

2020 record: 6-3

Cowboys just second season removed from unbeaten state-championship season.

6. Frenchtown

2020 record: 7-3

Graduated a ton after 2020 playoff run, but reloads rather than rebuilds each season.

7. Whitefish

2020 record: 5-4

Return a bevy of skill position players. Must develop lines to give them time to perform.

8. Columbia Falls

2020 record: 5-4

Will move the ball behind by a pair of explosive all-state returnees – RB Isaiah Roth and WR Cade Morgan.

9. Polson

2020 record: 4-5

Junior QB Jarrett Wilson drawing interest from in-state FCS programs. Throws to space well, pushing the offense.

10. Sidney

2020 record: 4-4

Becoming a playoff regular, looking to keep the trend moving in the same direction this fall.
