Best bets: Top 5 games to watch in Mississippi high school football this Friday night (Oct. 8)

The weather is starting to change, and for high school football fans in the Magnolia State, that means one thing — region play is here. Each week, Scorebook Live’s Tyler Cleveland highlights five games from around the state with big stakes or intriguing matchups. This week’s games feature five region games that could have a big impact on seeding come playoff time.

Here’s a look at some of the most important games around the state for Friday, Oct. 8.

STATEWIDE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

TOP 5 GAMES TO WATCH

Choctaw County (2-3) at East Webster (5-1)

Don’t let Choctaw County’s 2-3 record fool you — the Chargers are still one of the best teams in 2A. They proved it last week with a 39-6 romp over a pretty good Class 3A Union team. East Webster is coming off back-to-back wins over East Union and Calhoun City. The Wolverines picked up a huge win over Calhoun City last week, and another victory Friday would put them squarely in the driver’s seat in Region 2-2A.

Bay Springs (4-1) at Resurrection Catholic (4-1)

The Bulldogs and Eagles square off Friday night in a game that will help determine who wins Region 4-1A. Resurrection is sitting at 1-1 in region games after bouncing back from a lop-sided loss to Lumberton with a 42-6 win over Salem last week. Bay Springs is 2-0 after mauling Richton and Enterprise (Brookhaven).

Loyd Star (5-0) at Bogue Chitto (5-1)

Another mid-season district game that could determine playoff seeding is in Region 7-2A, where both Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto are 1-0 headed into this week’s showdown. Bogue Chitto has won four-straight and allowed just 13 total points in its last three games. Loyd Star had to fight to get past East Marion 35-32 last week to stay unbeaten, but has averaged better than 42 points a game offensively over its last four outings.

Starkville (5-0) at Tupelo (5-1)

That vaunted Tupelo defense was gaining quite the reputation before Oxford handed them a 22-6 loss at home last week. But they’ll have to pull a Ted Lasso and be like a goldfish when sophomore quarterback Trey Petty and Starkville roll into town Friday night. The Yellow Jackets are have won in dramatic fashion the last two weeks, with a 35-28 win over Madison Central on Sept. 23 and a 28-21 win over Clinton last Friday. The Jackets need the win to stay in first place in Region 2-6A, and Tupelo needs a win to get back in the hunt.

Picayune (5-1) at East Central (4-1)

The Maroon Tide and Hornets are both sitting pretty at 2-0 in Region 4-5A, but only one of them can come out of Friday’s matchup unscathed. Picayune has had East Central’s number the last two years. We’ll see if the revamped East Central ground game can keep pace with Dante Dowdell and that potent Picayune offense.
