Best bets: Top 5 games to watch this weekend in Mississippi high school football (Sept. 3-5)

Each week during the fall 2021 high school football season, SBLive Mississippi will highlight five games with intriguing matchups or major ramifications. Here’s a look at the best games from across the state scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 3-5.

(All games set for 7 p.m. Friday night unless otherwise noted)

1. Brandon (0-1) at Madison Central (1-0)

It’s a battle between two fo the big boys in the metro. Brandon looked much improved from last year in a close loss against defending North 6A Champion Oxford last week, and Madison Central did just enough to get past defending 5A State Champion West Jones last weekend. This one ought to be a slugfest.

2. Mendenhall (0-1) at Magee (0-0)

We missed the Simpson County Super Bowl last year, but this rivalry is ready to come back in a big way this weekend. Mendenhall is coming off a disappointing 34-12 loss to Columbia, and Magee hasn’t played since walking off the field at Veterans Memorial Stadium last year with the 4A Trophy.

3. Jeff Davis County (0-0) at Picayune (1-0)
(7 p.m. Saturday)

Picayune held the potent Poplarville offense to 259 total yards in a 21-13 season-opening win last week, while 3A front-runner Jeff Davis County had their first game against Collins cancelled. The game was rescheduled from Friday to Saturday due to Hurricane Ida, but it ought to be worth the wait.

4. Ridgeland (1-0) at Pearl (1-1)

Ridgeland is coming off a 42-26 win over Northwest Rankin in Flowood and would love to claim another Rankin County victim from the 6A ranks this weekend. The Pirates are coming off of a disappointing 13-12 loss to Gulfport down on the coast. It’s a great measuring-stick game for both programs.

5. Callaway vs. Murrah
(3 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium)

Neither program has played a game since 2019 thanks to Jackson Public Schools’ COVID-19 protocol last season. What better way to welcome football back to the City with Soul than a showcase game on Saturday in the big stadium?
