BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES FOR May 3-9:
Hank Eaton, Kossuth: Pitched a complete-game to get the win in Kossuth’s series-clinching, 2-0 win over Senatobia Friday night. He went seven innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out 15 batters. He also drove in one of the Aggies’ two runs.
Hunter Elliott, Tupelo: Pitched six innings without giving up an earned run in Tupelo’s 5-2 win over Oxford Thursday night, allowing four hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts. He also drove in a run.
Ross Highfill, Madison Central: Went 4-for-4 with a double and six RBIs in Madison Central’s 26-5 win over South Panola Thursday night, then hit a three-run homer in an 11-0 win Friday.
Bradley Loftin, DeSoto Central: Went the distance in the Jaguars’ 5-0 win over Germantown Friday night, allowing three hits and one walk and striking out 12 batters.
Miles Maliden, West Marion: Hit a two-run homer in West Marion’s 5-1, series-opening win over St. Andrew’s Friday night, then went 6.1 innings on the mound in Friday’s 12-0 win, giving up two hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts to clinch the series.
Davis Oswald, Nettleton: Threw a nearly perfect game in the Tigers’ series-opening, 5-0 win over Independence. He worked seven innings threw 63 of his 85 pitches for strikes, striking out 13 without giving up a hit or a walk. The game’s lone base-runner reached on an error. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a triple in that same game, then went 2-for-3 in Game Two with a home run and three RBIs.
Ty Long, Ripley: Pitched all seven innings of the Tigers’ 3-1 win over Pontotoc Thursday night. The freshman pitched a complete game, allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 hitters.
Hayden Roberts, East Union: Pitched seven innings in the Urchins’ 2-1, series-opening win over East Webster Thursday night, allowing one unearned run on three hits and five walks with 15 strikeouts. He also walked and scored the winning run in the eighth inning of Game One and racked up three RBIs and three runs scored in Game Two.
Blake Summerlin, Northwest Rankin: Threw a complete-game no-hitter against West Harrison Friday night, striking out 14 batters and issuing just two walks over seven innings.
Montravious Winn, Ridgeland: Pitched a complete-game no-hitter against Cleveland Central in a 1-0 win in Game One of the 5A North second-round series, walking three batters and striking out seven. He also picked up the game-winning RBI in Game Three with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning.
