What we’re watching: SBLive Power 25 high school football games of the week

Last Sunday we released our fourth Power 25 of the 2020 high school football season, a weekly look at the top high school football teams in the country.

Every week, SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette previews the country’s top high school football games with an emphasis on what their results mean for the Power 25. Here’s what we’re watching this week:

Sept. 17: Edgewater (Orlando, Fla.) (0-0) vs No. 1 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) (1-0)

Edgewater, a team on our Power 25 radar, opens their season on the road against mighty IMG Academy on Thursday. 2021 Alabama wide receiver commit Christian Leary is Edgewater’s top player.

Sept. 18: Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) (2-0) vs. No. 3 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) (2-0)

Georgia High School Football Daily ranks Grayson at No. 1 and Collins Hill at No. 6 in the state’s 7A Class. This should be a great one. 2022 Collins Hill QB Sam Horn will be a Division 1 college football player. Grayson running back Phil Mafah is committed to Clemson.

Sept. 18: Male (Louisville, Ky.) (0-0) vs. No. 11 Trinity (Louisville, Ky.) (1-0)

Trinity’s defense is one of the best in the country, led by senior linebacker Jack Dingle, a Cincinnati commit. Expect the Shamrocks’ defense to look as dominant as they did in their 44-7 season opening win over Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) on Friday against in-state foe Male.

Sept. 18: Pleasant Grove (Utah) (5-0) vs. No. 13 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) (5-0)

Star senior quarterback Jaxson Dart and Corner Canyon should roll in this game, but Pleasant Grove will be one of their toughest tests of the year so far.

No Title

After a great conversation with Coach Kelly and Coach Bible, I am extremely grateful to have earned a scholarship offer to UCLA. #8Clap #GoBruins🔵🟡🐻 @KjarEric @Taylor_Kelly10 @CoachFredF @UCLAFootball pic.twitter.com/d6YlHH6QT6

Sept. 18: No. 18 Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) (4-0) vs. Hewitt-Trussville (Hoover, Ala.) (4-0)

This is one of the biggest games of the Alabama regular season. The winner will be ranked in next week’s Power 25. The name to know for Thompson is do-it-all senior Sam Reynolds, a South Carolina commit. Senior running back Armoni Goodwin, an Auburn commit, is Hewitt-Trussville’s top player.

This game will air live on ESPNU.

Sept. 18: North Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) (4-0) vs. No. 22 Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.) (4-0)

Many national polls leave out Center Grove. We don’t. Look for the Trojans to win big this week.

Sept. 18: No. 23 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) (0-0) vs. Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) (1-0)

Defense is where the majority of the big name returners are for American Heritage, led by safety James Williams (Miami commit), cornerback Earl Little Jr. and defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. They’ll be tasked with stopping Chaminade-Madonna senior running back Thad Franklin, arguably the top RB in the country.

Sept. 18: No. 25 Hoover (Ala.) (4-0) vs. Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.) (4-0)

We left Hoover out of the Power 25 from two weeks ago following a close 24-21 win over Vestavia Hills. Like Vestavia Hills, Oak Mountain is a good team, but one Hoover should beat by at least two scores.

Sept. 18: St. Xavier (Cincinnati) (2-1) vs. Cathedral (Indianapolis) (4-0)

Cathedral can keep their Power 25 hopes alive with a win in this game. Senior receiver Camden Jordan has already caught seven touchdowns in 2020 for Cathedral.

Sept. 18: Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) (1-0) vs. North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) (2-0)

This is a massive game in Georgia. Neither of these teams are currently ranked, but that could change after Friday night. Parkview is led by star running back Cody Brown, a Tennessee commit. North Gwinnett linebacker Barrett Carter, a Clemson commit, already has a pick-six in 2020.

Sept. 18: Bixby (Okla.) (2-0) vs. Stillwater (Okla.) (2-0)

Bixby is Oklahoma’s top team. Junior running back Braylin Presley has rushed for 300 yards and three TDs so far in 2020. He’s also caught four touchdowns. Stillwater is ranked in the top ten in the state. Bixby needs to win in order to remain as a fringe Power 25 team.

Sept. 18: American Fork (Utah) (5-0) vs. Skyridge (Lehi, Utah) (5-0)

These are two top five teams in Utah. American Fork averages 50.8 points per game. Skyridge averages 42.6.

Sept. 18: Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill, Texas) (3-1) vs. Bryant (Ark.) (2-0)

Bryant has won 19 straight games. They need to win to stay in the Power 25 discussion.

Thank you for joining the discussion on SBLive!
