With the 2019-20 high school boys basketball season under way, Scorebook Live California is ranking the top 50 players from the LA City, Southern and San Diego Sections. The rankings will be released in groups of 10 over the next several days.
Below are numbers 30 to 21.
30. Tyler Powell – Ribet Academy – F – 2021
Powell was the only sophomore named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 4A team last season after he helped lead Ribet to Section and State championships. He scored 24 points in Ribet’s season opening win over Alemany this week.
29. Justin Rochelin – Heritage Christian – G/F – 2021
Rochelin holds offers from Arizona State, Florida and a few other schools. He shot 47% from downtown last season.
28. Malik Thomas – Damien – SG – 2021
Thomas was the only sophomore named to the Division 1 All-CIF Southern Section team a year ago after averaging 19 points per game. He has scholarship offers from Washington, Pepperdine and Northern Arizona.
27. Wilhelm Breidenbach – Mater Dei – C – 2021
Breidenbach is a fantastic post player, but he can also handle the ball very well and is a strong shooter. He can play any position on the floor. As a sophomore, Breidenbach was an All-CIF Southern Section Open Division selection. He holds scholarship offers from Nebraska, Cal, USC and Vanderbilt.
26. Harrison Hornery – Mater Dei – Wing – 2021
Hornery is committed to USC. He’s a fantastic shooter and will be a key part of Mater Dei’s Open Division title challenge this season.
25. Dior Johnson – Mayfair – PG – 2022
Johnson is considered one of the top sophomore point guards in the nation. He’ll be playing at Mayfair this season, but hasn’t been ruled eligible yet by the Southern Section. Johnson holds scholarship offers from 16 Division 1 programs, per 247Sports.com
24. Clark Slajchert – Oak Park – PG – 2020
Slajchert is committed to Penn. He’s one of the top scorers in the region. A year ago, Slajchert averaged 30 points per game.
23. Andre Henry – St. Francis – G – 2020
Henry signed with UC Irvine earlier this month. He averaged 19.3 points and 11.9 rebounds for St. Francis last season.
22. Lamont Butler – Riverside Poly – PG – 2020
Butler is a San Diego State commit. He was an All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 selection last season. SDSU head coach Brian Dutcher called Butler, “the ultimate teammate — a pass-first point guard who just wants to win and will do whatever it takes,” in an interview with the San Diego Union Tribune earlier this month.
21. Judah Brown – Pacifica Christian – F – 2020
Brown is committed to St. Mary’s. He was an All-CIF Southern Section selection in Division 4AA last season. In Pacifica Christian’s 63-53 win over Santa Margarita this week, Brown scored 19 points and grabbed ten rebounds. He averaged 16.4 points and ten rebounds per game last season.
