Rudy Navarro’s 4 TDs lead Mission Oak over Redwood in Central Section Division II playoffs

TULARE, Calif. – Rudy Navarro passed for three touchdowns and ran for another TD to lead Mission Oak to a 28-24 victory over Redwood in the first round of the CIF Central Section Division II playoffs Friday night at Bob Mathias Stadium.

Mission Oak (10-0) advances to play Kingsburg in the quarterfinals next week.

The Hawks struck first as Navarro connected with Anthony Ledesma on a 39-yard touchdown pass to give Mission Oak an early 7-0 lead. Redwood responded with 10 unanswered points, including a 17-yard touchdown run by Damian Garcia, to take a 10-7 lead.

That would prove to be their only lead of the game, as Navarro scored on a one-yard run, then hit Kaream Davis on a 43-yard touchdown pass to give Mission Oak a 21-10 halftime lead.

They traded scores in the third quarter before Redwood QB Francisco Alvarez thew a touchdown pass to Ashton Ibarra to cut the deficit to 28-24.

Redwood had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Mission Oak defensive back Lorenzo Nunes intercepted a pass from Alvarez with 21 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

“That was a gritty win by our team,” said Mission Oak coach Mike Machado. “We have 35 or 36 guys on our roster and are competing in Division II, so it’s fun to watch our guys compete.”

Machado had high praise for Navarro after the game.

“He’s a really good quarterback and is getting more comfortable in our system,” Machado said of Navarro. “He makes good decisions, he uses his feet to move the chains, and spreads the ball out to our playmakers. If he keeps doing that, we’ll continue to have a chance to advance.”
