SBLive’s California Top 25: St. Francis (Mountain View) climbs into top five of statewide high school football rankings

The fall 2021 California high school football season continued last week with several big games, including No. 6 De La Salle beating No. 8 Folsom 31-10 and No. 3 Servite beating No. 14 Santa Margarita 48-21.

After the eighth week of action across California, here are SBLive’s Top 25 California high school football rankings. The statewide rankings span all 10 sections and are compiled by reporter Connor Morrissette. They will be released every Monday throughout the fall 2021 season.



Oct. 11, 2021

1. Mater Dei (5-0)

Last week: 1

Elijah Brown won his tenth straight start for the Monarchs leading Mater Dei to a 55-16 win over No. 24 Orange Lutheran a week after they beat No. 2 St. John Bosco 42-21.

2. St. John Bosco (6-1)

Last week: 2

Prior to losing to No. 1 Mater Dei two weeks ago, St. John Bosco had rolled through their non-league schedule which included three of the top teams in the country in Central (Fla.), East (Ill.) and Oscar Smith (Va.). The Braves beat JSerra 44-7 last week.

3. Servite (7-0)

Last week: 3

On his 19th birthday, Friar senior running back Houston Thomas dominated in Servite’s 48-21 win over No. 14 Santa Margarita last week scoring three touchdowns.

4. Corona Centennial (7-0)

Last week: 4

Centennial beat up Santiago 69-14 to move to 7-0. Senior Jaden Mickey returned a punt for a touchdown in the win.

5. St. Francis (Mountain View, Calif.) (5-0)

Last week: 6

St. Francis beat Valley Christian 41-27 and with No. 8 Folsom’s loss to No. 6 De La Salle, the Lancers move into the top five this week.

6. De La Salle (4-2)

Last week: 7

De La Salle made a statement with their 31-10 win over No. 8 Folsom last week. Arizona commit Zeke Berry returned the opening kickoff for a TD in the win.

7. Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) (5-0)

Last week: 8

A week after losing star receiver Hassan Mahasin to a torn ACL, Serra responded with 39-6 win over Archbishop Riordan.

8. Folsom (6-1)

Last week: 5

Folsom had a chance to put themselves in poll position for the Northern California Open Division state championship spot if they went on to win a Sac-Joaquin Section title, but lost to No. 6 De La Salle 31-10 last week. The Bulldogs could still play for a state title, but it won’t be at the Open Division level following the defeat.

9. Mission Viejo (6-1)

Last week: 9

Mission Viejo beat Helix 38-21 to stay in the top ten.

10. Rocklin (7-0)

Last week: 10

Rocklin shutout Oak Ridge 21-0. Senior running back Anthony Johnston rushed for two touchdowns in the win.

11. Sierra Canyon (4-3)

Last week: 11

Sierra Canyon’s defense dominated Westlake in a 35-0 win. The Trailblazers’ best win this season came against No. 12 Norco, 35-21.

12. Norco (6-1)

Last week: 12

Norco beat Corona 55-13. Jaydn Ott rushed for two touchdowns.

13. Cathedral Catholic (5-2)

Last week: 14

The Dons are the No. 1 team in San Diego, but have struggled against top out of Section opponents. Cathedral Catholic lost to No. 4 Corona Centennial 57-14 and No. 6 De La Salle 49-21 this season. They’re undefeated against teams from San Diego and will stay at No. 1 in the Section until a San Diego team knocks them off.

14. Santa Margarita (5-2)

Last week: 13

Santa Margarita made it interesting at times with No. 3 Servite, but eventually fell 48-21 last week.

15. Los Alamitos (6-1)

Last week: 15

Los Alamitos junior quarterback Malachi Nelson, an Oklahoma commit, completed 16 of 21 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Griffins to a 35-28 win over No. 25 Edison last week.

16. Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) (6-1)

Last week: 16

Lincoln beat La Jolla 41-6. Jalen Daniels threw two touchdown passes.

17. Carlsbad (7-0)

Last week: 17

Carlsbad took down San Marcos 42-17 to stay undefeated.

18. Buchanan (6-1)

Last week: 18

Buchanan beat No. 23 Central 24-17. Jayden Mandal threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Buchanan’s defense came up with three interceptions in the win.

19. Pittsburg (3-1)

Last week: 19

After three weeks off, Pittsburg finally got back on the field and beat Heritage 49-14.

20. Inglewood (6-0)

Last week: 22

Inglewood shutout Hawthorne 59-0. The game was the Sentinels’ second shutout in a row.

21. Warren (Downey, Calif.) (6-0)

Last week: 23

Warren took down Lynwood 61-6 to stay undefeated on the season.

22.  Vista Murrieta (6-1)

Last week: 24

Vista Murrieta posted their second straight shutout 51-0 over Temecula Valley.

23. Central (Fresno, Calif.) (5-1)

Last week: 20

Central lost to No. 18 Buchanan 24-17, but stays in the Top 25 thanks to wins over Stockton Edison and Clovis.

24. Orange Lutheran (5-2)

Last week: 24

The Lancers started the year 5-0 under new head coach Rod Sherman, but have since lost two games in a row to No. 3 Servite and No. 1 Mater Dei. They play No. 2 St. John Bosco this week. Welcome to life in the Trinity League…

25. Edison (4-3)

Last week: 25

Edison didn’t quit and fought back to get within a touchdown of No. 15 Los Alamitos in a 35-28 defeat on Thursday night.
