SBLive’s San Diego Section Top 10 Football Rankings: Poway and Mt. Carmel debut

The third week of football games in the San Diego Section featured lots of movement throughout the top 10 and a cancelled game between two top 10 teams. Two new teams enter the top 10 this week led by Poway at No. 9.

Cathedral Catholic blew out Chaminade on Friday to remain No. 1 in the latest SBLive Top 10 San Diego Section high school football rankings (Sep. 6). The rankings are compiled by reporter Bodie De Silva and will be released every Monday throughout the fall 2021 season.

1. Cathedral Catholic (2-1)

The Dons bounced back with a 50-17 win over Chaminade in the Honor Bowl. Lucky Sutton scored three touchdowns on the ground.

2. Carlsbad (3-0)

The Lancers moved remained unbeaten with their third straight win by 21 points or more.

3. Lincoln (2-1)

The Hornets looked impressive on both sides of the ball in a 30-13 victory over Mission Hills.

4. Mater Dei Catholic (2-0)

The Crusaders had their highly anticipated matchup against Helix cancelled due to COVID-19 protocol.

Last week: 5

5. Mission Hills (2-1)

Mission Hills struggled against Lincoln after two big victories to start the season. They’ll host La Costa Canyon this week to start Avocado League play.

6. Helix (2-0)

Helix had their game against Mater Dei Catholic cancelled due to COVID-19 protocol. They’ll get their shot against No. 1 Cathedral Catholic this week.

7. Scripps Ranch (3-0)

The Falcons beat San Diego by four touchdowns on Friday to continue their impressive start. They’ll travel out of section to play Elsinore this week.

8. Torrey Pines (1-1)

After a week off, Torrey Pines put up 42 points in their three touchdown win at Rancho Bernardo. They’ll host No. 9 Poway in the lone top-10 matchup this week.

Last week: 10

9. Poway (2-1)

Poway ran the ball 42 times last week in their 28-14 win at Ramona. They’ll travel to Torrey Pines on Friday.

10. Mt. Carmel (3-0)

The Sun Devils remained unbeaten with a shutout victory at Valley Center. Boise State commit Jayden Virgin had seven tackles, three sacks, and a blocked punt.
