SBLive’s LA City Section Top 10 football rankings: Dorsey debuts

The fall 2021 high school football season continued this week in the Los Angeles City Section. In the most notable game of the week, No. 5 Garfield took down No. 10 Canoga Park 54-28.

San Pedro remains No. 1 in the latest SBLive Top 10 LA City Section high school football rankings (Aug. 30). The rankings are compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette and are released weekly throughout the 2021 season.


Aug. 30, 2021

1. San Pedro (1-0)

Last week: 1

San Pedro was the first City team to take the field this season and the Pirates won big over Long Beach St. Anthony 42-0 in week 0, but since then they haven’t been able to play due to COVID-19. They’ll next take the field against Bell at home on September 10th.

2. Birmingham (0-2)

Last week: 2

A week after Birmingham fell to Calabasas 20-13, the Patriots lost to Chaminade 49-7. These tough non-league games will prepare them for a deep playoff run.

3. Banning (1-0)

Last week: 3

Banning beat up on Cerritos 50-0 without star running back Jakob Galloway. Sophomore Andrew Devoe rushed for three touchdowns in the Pilots’ win.

4. Palisades (2-0)

Last week: 6

Palisades steamrolled San Fernando 49-6. Daniel Anoh rushed for three touchdowns and QB Dylan Hassid completed all five of his passing attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

5. Garfield (2-0)

Last week: 7

Garfield took down No. 10 Canoga Park 54-28. The game was closer than the scoreline indicated (it was 23-21 Garfield at halftime), but a 24 point third quarter from the Bulldogs won them the game. Sophomore tailback Damian Cornejo rushed for 182 yards and three TDs.

6. Venice (0-1)

Last week: 5

Venice fell to Harvard-Westlake 27-13. Paul Kessler threw a TD to Rashawn Jackson in the defeat for the Gondoliers.

7. Granada Hills (1-1)

Last week: 4

Granada Hills lost big to Hart 61-12. Star running back Dijon Stanley missed the game with an injury.

8. Dorsey (1-0)

Last week: NR

For the first time since the 2019 season, Dorsey took the field and beat Santa Monica 14-0 on Friday. The victory was head coach Stafon Johnson’s first with the Dons. Dorsey QB Josh Coleman hit Mychai Williams for a TD in the victory.

9. Eagle Rock (2-0)

Last week: 9

Eagle Rock beat Grant 36-15.

10. Canoga Park (0-1)

Last week: 8

Canoga Park senior Kayden Collins rushed for 261 yards and two TDs in a 54-28 defeat to Garfield. He also had a defensive TD.
