SBLive’s LA City Section Top 10 football rankings: Palisades jumps to No. 6; Eagle Rock and Franklin debut

The fall 2021 high school football season kicked off last week in the Los Angeles City Section with No. 1 San Pedro recording a dominant 42-0 win over St. Anthony.

San Pedro remains No. 1 in the latest SBLive Top 10 LA City Section high school football rankings (Aug. 23). The rankings are compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette and are released weekly throughout the 2021 season.


Aug. 23, 2021

1. San Pedro (1-0)

Last week: 1

San Pedro was the first City team to take the field this season and the Pirates won big over Long Beach St. Anthony 42-0 on Thursday night. Seniors Aidan Jackson and Rob Sarmiento had big games. Sarmiento kicked a 24-yard field goal, had a long punt return, and caught a TD pass. Jackson ran for a touchdown and threw for two.

2. Birmingham (0-1)

Last week: 2

Birmingham fell to Calabasas 20-13. Dante Holly caught a 49-yard TD in the game. The Patriots have the toughest non-league schedule in the City Section by a mile.

3. Banning (0-0)

Last week: 5

San Jose State commit Jakob Galloway should have a huge senior season at running back.

4. Granada Hills (1-0)

Last week: 4

Granada Hills rolled over Arleta 40-8. Star junior running back Dijon Stanley rushed for five touchdowns, but left the game with a right arm injury.

5. Venice (0-0)

Last week: 3

Venice couldn’t play Edison to open their season due to COVID-19.

Wide out Rashawn Jackson is one of the most explosive players in the City Section and the Gondoliers have a quarterback who will get him the ball in Paul Kessler.

6. Palisades (1-0)

Last week: 8

Palisades beat up Cleveland 39-0 which gave new co-head coaches Rocky Montz and Chris Hyduke their first win. Johnny Babala intercepted two passes in the game and Victor Mindel picked off one for the Dolphins, who led 33-0 at halftime.

7. Garfield (1-0)

Last week: 9

In Garfield’s 41-0 win over Montebello sophomore Damian Cornejo rushed for two TDs.

8. Canoga Park (0-0)

Last week: 6

Canoga Park thinks they can win the Valley Mission League with two way standout Kayden Collins and linebacker Anthony Villalobos anchoring the Hunters’ defense. Canoga’s game last week was canceled due to would-be opponent Canyon entering COVID-19 protocols.

9. Eagle Rock (1-0)

Last week: NR

The Eagles dominated Taft 55-0 to move into this week’s rankings.

10. Franklin (1-0)

Last week: NR

Franklin rolled to a 33-0 win over Bell to enter this week’s rankings.

On the cusp: Reseda, Kennedy, Chavez
