Major League Baseball is back for a full 2021 season and the CIF San Diego Section is well represented.
From Stephen Strasburg to Sergio Romo, there are 15 former CIFSDS high school baseball stars on MLB Opening Day rosters. Here’s a look at all 15 players:
FORMER SAN DIEGO SECTION STARS IN MLB
Kevin Ginkel – RHP – El Capitan HS
Ginkel has pitched 40 innings for the Diamondbacks over his first two seasons in the league.
Alex Jackson – C – Rancho Bernardo HS
Jackson was the sixth overall pick out of Rancho Bernardo in 2014. He’s had 20 at-bats for Braves over the past two seasons.
Cole Sulser – RHP – Ramona HS
Sulser made his debut with the Rays in 2019 and pitched in 15 games for the Orioles in 2020.
Tony Wolters – C – Rancho Buena Vista HS
Wolters played in 391 games for the Rockies over the past five seasons and will serve as the backup catcher for the Cubs this season.
Trevor Williams – RHP – Rancho Bernardo HS
Williams joins the Cubs after pitching 394 innings during his five seasons with the Pirates.
KANSAS CITY ROYALS
Kyle Zimmer – RHP – La Jolla HS
Zimmer was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft and made his debut in 2019 following several arm injuries.
Sergio Romo – RHP – Brawley HS
Romo won three World Series Championships with the Giants and begins his 14th major league season, now with his sixth different team.
Kevin Newman – SS – Poway HS
Newman his .308 with 12 home runs during the 2019 season and now begins his fourth year with the Pirates.
Trevor Cahill – RHP – Vista HS
Cahill has thrown 1,470 innings as he enters his 13th season, now playing for his ninth different team.
Phillip Evans – INF/OF – La Costa Canyon HS
Evans made his debut with the Mets in 2017 and was hitting .359 in 2020 before a season-ending injury.
SAN DIEGO PADRES
Joe Musgrove – RHP – Grossmont HS
Musgrove was a two-time All-CIF selection for the Foothillers and a first round pick by the Blue Jays. He enters his sixth major league season, now with his third team.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
Alex Dickerson – OF – Poway HS
Dickerson had a career year for the Giants in 2020, batting .298 with ten home runs.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
Tommy Edman – INF – La Jolla Country Day School
Edman has played six different positions for the Cardinals since making his debut in 2019 and is hitting. 283 during that time.
Matt Bush – RHP – Mission Bay HS
Bush was the first overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft and later served over three years in prison before making his major league debut with the Rangers in 2016. He’s been out since the 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.
Stephen Strasburg – RHP – West Hills HS
Strasburg was the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft and is now entering his 12th season, all with the Washington Nationals. He’s been named an All-Star three times and was the MVP of the 2019 World Series.
