SBLive’s Southern Section Top 25 Football Rankings: No. 3 Servite battles No. 2 Mater Dei this week

Southern California high school football fans get their third top-five matchup of the season on Saturday when No. 3 Servite hosts No. 2 Mater Dei.

Here are SBLive’s Top 25 Southern Section high school football rankings for the week of March 29. The rankings were compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette.

1. St. John Bosco (3-0)

Last week: 1

St. John Bosco sophomores Matayo Uiagalelei (left) and Pierce Clarkson

St. John Bosco sophomore tight end/defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei caught two touchdowns and had multiple quarterback pressures in the Braves’ 38-28 win over No. 3 Servite.

2. Mater Dei (2-0)

Last week: 2

Elijah Brown

Mater Dei rolled over Orange Lutheran 49-7 on Friday.

3. Servite (2-1)

Last week: 3

Noah Fifita

Servite fell to No. 1 St. John Bosco 38-28 on Friday. Friars junior QB Noah Fifita rushed for two TDs in the loss.

4. Sierra Canyon (2-1)

Last week: 4

Cole Bullock

After falling to No. 1 St. John Bosco 42-21 in their opener, Sierra Canyon dominated St. Bernard two weeks ago winning 56-0. Last Friday, the Trailblazers shutout Oaks Christian for the first time in the school’s history winning 42-0.

5. Mission Viejo (2-0)

Last week: 5

Mikey Matthews had 12 catches for 133 yards in Mission Viejo’s 38-14 win over Upland on Saturday night.

6. Corona Centennial (2-0)

Last week: 6

Jake Retzlaff

Corona Centennial has outscored its opponents 113-6 so far in 2021.

7. Santa Margarita (2-1)

Last week: 14

Santa Margarita hung tough with No. 1 St. John Bosco in their Trinity League opener, but eventually fell 65-28. Last week, the Eagles dominated JSerra winning 42-0.

8. Alemany (2-0)

Last week: 7

Alemany took down No. 13 Bishop Amat 47-35 in their second Mission League game of the season.

9. San Clemente (2-0)

Last week: 11

San Clemente beat Aliso Niguel 41-7 on Friday. This week, the Tritons take on No. 18 San Juan Hills.

10. Los Alamitos (3-0)

Last week: 12

Sophomore QB Malachi Nelson has looked like the real deal in Los Alamitos’ wins over Long Beach Millikan, No. 24 Corona del Mar and No. 17 Edison to open the season.

11. Loyola (1-0)

Last week: 13

Loyola took down St. Bernard 28-24 to win their first game of the season.

12. Long Beach Poly (2-0)

Last week: 15

Poly won a hard fought overtime showdown against No. 19 Gardena Serra to open the season thanks to a balanced rushing attack and good defense. They’ll now roll in the Moore League and that’s what happened two weeks ago in their 41-0 win over Lakewood.

13. Bishop Amat (1-1)

Last week: 8

Tobin O’Dell

Bishop Amat fell to No. 8 Alemany 47-35 to move to 1-1 on the year. Junior QB Tobin O’Dell completed 18 of 28 passes for 262 yards and four TDs in the loss.

14. Oaks Christian (2-1)

Last week: 10

Oaks Christian was shutout for the first time in program history on Friday, falling 42-0 to No. 4 Sierra Canyon.

15. La Habra (3-0)

Last week: 16

La Habra took down Sonora 30-14 on Friday.

16. Vista Murrieta (2-0)

Last week: 18

Vista Murrieta beat JW North 29-7 to move to 2-0.

17. Edison (2-1)

Last week: 17

Edison lost to No. 10 Los Alamitos 27-20 on Friday, which keeps them at No. 17 this week.

18. San Juan Hills (2-0)

Last week: 25

San Juan Hills beat Capo Valley 52-41. Brayden Burnes rushed for four TDs in the win.

19. Serra Gardena (2-1)

Last week: 19

Serra Gardena squeaked past Cathedral 15-14. Elijah Davis rushed for 85 yards and a TD in the win.

20. Inglewood (1-0)

Last week: 21

Inglewood went 12-1 a year ago and the Sentinels have gotten better in the offseason, adding 2022 Cal QB commit Justyn Martin and 2022 Washington State linebacker commit Taariq Al-Uqdah. They began their season Thursday night with a 44-8 win over Leuzinger.

21. Valencia (2-0)

Last week: 22

Valencia once again looks like the class of the Foothill League. The Vikings beat Canyon 73-3 on Friday. Tyler Voss threw for 390 yards and four TDs.

22. Murrieta Valley (2-0)

Last week: 23

Murrieta Valley has put up 48 and 53 points in their two wins this season. In last week’s 53-35 victory over Great Oak, DJ Watts rushed for three TDs.

23. La Serna (2-0)

Last week: 24

La Serna beat El Rancho 28-0 on Friday. Senior quarterback Dylan Long completed 19 of 29 passes for 274 yards and three TDs.

24. Corona del Mar (2-1)

Corona del Mar has wins over Palos Verdes and Huntington Beach. Their lone loss on the year came against No. 10 Los Alamitos 52-28.

Last week: NR

25. Orange (3-0)

Last week: NR

Orange enters the rankings this week following wins over Villa Park, La Mirada and Estancia. Senior quarterback Daylen Pedroza and freshman running back Kobe Boykin have had strong starts to the season.

Other teams considered: Culver City, Rancho Verde, Cajon, Norco, Damien, Glendora, Etiwanda, Pacifica (Oxnard), Paraclete, Rancho Cucamonga, Lawndale, Bishop Diego, St. Bernard and Crespi
