SBLive’s California Top 25: Brentwood (Liberty) and Brentwood (Bakersfield) debut in latest statewide high school football rankings

Week three of the spring 2021 California high school football season wrapped up over the weekend with several Top 25 matchups, including Cathedral Catholic taking down St. Augustine 41-14 in the San Diego Section, St. John Bosco beating Servite 38-28 in the Southern Section and Rocklin beating Oak Ridge 38-13 in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Those games all had an impact on this week’s statewide Top 25 rankings, which you can view below. The rankings were compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette and will be released every Monday throughout the shortened season.

1. St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) (3-0)

St. John Bosco sophomore tight end/defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei caught two touchdowns and had multiple quarterback pressures in the Braves’ 38-28 win over No. 3 Servite.

2. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) (2-0)

Mater Dei rolled over Orange Lutheran 49-7 on Friday.

3. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) (3-0)

Last week: 3

De La Salle Spartans football

De La Salle beat San Ramon Valley 49-6. Nico Torrez scored a TD in the win.

4. Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) (2-1)

Last week: 4

Noah Fifita

Servite fell to No. 1 St. John Bosco 38-28 on Friday. Friars junior QB Noah Fifita rushed for two TDs in the loss.

5. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) (2-1)

Last week: 5

Cole Bullock

After falling to No. 1 St. John Bosco 42-21 in their opener, Sierra Canyon dominated St. Bernard two weeks ago winning 56-0. Last Friday, the Trailblazers shutout Oaks Christian for the first time in the school’s history winning 42-0.

6. Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: 6

Serra beat Sacred Heart Cathedral 49-10 on Saturday.

7. Mission Viejo (2-0)

Last week: 7

Mikey Matthews had 12 catches for 133 yards in Mission Viejo’s 38-14 win over Upland on Saturday night.

8. Corona Centennial (Corona, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: 8

Corona Centennial has outscored its opponents 113-6 so far in 2021.

9. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) (3-0)

Cathedral Catholic beat St. Augustine 41-14. The dominating win means the Dons retain their spot as the No. 1 team out of San Diego.

10. Folsom (3-0)

Last week: 11

Folsom beat Del Oro 45-6. Tyler Tremain threw five TDs in the win.

11. Santa Margarita (2-1)

Last week: NR

Santa Margarita hung tough with No. 1 St. John Bosco in their Trinity League opener, but eventually fell 65-28. Last week, the Eagles dominated JSerra winning 42-0.

12. Alemany (Mission Hills, Calif.) (2-0)

Alemany took down No. 13 Bishop Amat 47-35 in their second Mission League game of the season.

13. Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: 18

Buchanan took down No. 19 Central 31-28. Bears kicker Austin Arroyo hit a field goal with no time remaining to win the game for Buchanan.

14. San Clemente (2-0)

Last week: 17

San Clemente beat Aliso Niguel 41-7 on Friday. This week, the Tritons take on San Juan Hills.

15. Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif.) (1-1)

Last week: 19

Valley Christian beat Archbishop Mitty 19-10. Chase Laubach rushed for 118 yards in the win.

16. San Joaquin Memorial (Fresno, Calif.) (1-0)

Last week: 20

Junior running back TJ Hall rushed for 101 yards and two TDs in San Joaquin Memorial’s season opening 37-14 win over Palma.

17. Monterey Trail (Elk Grove, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: 21

Chris Lands rushed for 106 yards and a TD against Clayton Valley Charter over the weekend. Monterey Trail won the game 24-13.

18. St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.) (2-1)

Last week: 22

St. Mary’s beat Tracy 54-14. Tyrei Washington rushed for three TDs in the win.

19. Central (Fresno, Calif.) (1-1)

Last week: 16

Central lost to No. 13 Buchanan on a last second field goal. QB DJ Stevens rushed for 204 yards and threw two TDs in the defeat.

20. Los Alamitos (3-0)

Last week: 24

Sophomore QB Malachi Nelson has looked like the real deal in Los Alamitos’ wins over Long Beach Millikan, Corona del Mar and Edison to open the season.

21. Pittsburg (2-0)

Last week: 25

Pittsburg beat Heritage 35-16.

22. Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: NR

Lincoln enters the rankings this week following wins over Point Loma and Serra. The Hornets haven’t allowed a point so far in 2021.

23. Rocklin (2-0)

Last week: NR

Rocklin not only upset Oak Ridge, they blew them out winning 38-13. Junior receiver Nathan Kent caught two TDs in the win.

24. Liberty (Brentwood, Calif.) (2-0)

Last week: NR

Liberty is 2-0 on the year. The Lions have allowed only six points in their two victories.

25. Liberty (Bakersfield, Calif.) (1-0)

Last week: NR

Liberty opened its season with a 45-6 win over Ridgeview.
