SBLive’s San Diego Section Top 10: Cathedral Catholic, St. Augustine move up in Week 1 football rankings

Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine each opened the season with impressive victories, vaulting them to the top two spots in this week’s rankings.

Here are SBLive’s Top 10 San Diego Section high school football rankings for Week One (March 15). The rankings were compiled by SBLive California reporter Bodie DeSilva.

1. Cathedral Catholic (1-0)

The Dons made a statement in week one, shutting out Torrey Pines, 41-0. They were strong in all three phases of the game, led by junior quarterback Charlie Mirer’s three touchdown passes.

2. St. Augustine (1-0)

Last week: 5

The Saints showed what they are capable of in week one, taking down previously top ranked Helix on the road, 21-13. The Saints have an advantage up front on both sides of the ball against nearly everyone in the county.

3. Oceanside (0-0)

Last week: 2

The Pirates scrimmaged against La Jolla this past week and will open up Avocado League play against Mission Hills on Friday.

4. Helix (0-1)

Last week: 1

The Highlanders got a strong performance from junior running back Christian Washington, but were upended by St. Augustine 21-13 on Friday night.

5. Lincoln (0-0)

Last week: 4

The Hornets will start their five game season this week against Point Loma. Games against Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine are on the horizon.

6. El Camino (0-0)

Last week: 7

El Camino Oceanside

El Camino held an intrasquad scrimmage last week. They’ll start the season at league foe La Costa Canyon on Friday.

7. Mater Dei Catholic (0-0)

Last week: 8

The Crusaders open the season with a big opportunity against fourth-ranked Helix, the first ever matchup between the two schools.

8. Carlsbad (0-0)

Last week: 9

Carlsbad scrimmaged against San Pasqual on Friday. They’ll start the season at home against tenth-ranked Torrey Pines.

9. Granite Hills (1-0)

Last week: NR

The Eagles left no doubt with a 56-7 win over Valhalla on Saturday night. They’ll host El Capitan this Friday.

10. Torrey Pines (0-1)

Last week: 6

The Falcons struggled in all three phases during Friday’s opener against Cathedral Catholic. They’ll be on the road once again, at Carlsbad on Friday.
