What we’re watching: SBLive Power 25 high school football games of the week (Week 18)

On Sunday we released our 19th Power 25 of the 2020 high school football season, a weekly look at the top high school football teams in the country.

Every week, SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette previews the country’s top high school football games with an emphasis on what their results mean for the Power 25. One or two of the teams involved in each game is on our Power 25 radar. Here’s what we’re watching this week.

Dec. 29: Ednar Karr (New Orleans, La.) (10-1) vs. Carencro (Lafayette, La.) (10-1) (4A state championship)

Senior receiver Destyn Hill has had a great season for Edna Karr. He’s been a big reason why the Cougars are a top four team in Louisiana. If Edna Karr captures a state title, they’ll be considered for a Power 25 spot.

Dec. 30: No 4. Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) (13-0) vs. Collins Hills (Suwanee, Ga.) (12-2) (7A championship)

Miami-bound quarterback Jake Garcia looks to lead Grayson to the 7A state title on Wednesday night, which would lock the Rams into the top five of the Power 25. Garcia has thrown seven touchdowns in the playoffs so far. Collins Hill QB Sam Horn, a four-star recruit, has thrown for five touchdowns in the Eagles’ last two games.

Dec. 30: Acadiana (Lafayette, La.) (10-1) vs. Alexandria (La.) (7-0) (5A state championship game)

If Alexandria can shock Acadiana, they’d have to be considered for a Power 25 spot alongside Louisiana’s Division 2 champion, 10-0 St. Thomas More and potentially Edna Karr.

Jan. 1: Highland Park (Dallas, Texas) (11-0) vs. No. 10 Ryan (Denton, Texas) (12-0) (5A Division 1 playoffs)

Highland Park will be Ryan’s toughest test of the postseason, but expect the Raiders to win to maintain their Power 25 top ten ranking. Memphis QB signee Seth Henigan completed 21 of 30 passes and threw three scores in Ryan’s win over Longview last week. Highland Park’s top player is 2021 QB Brayden Schager.

Jan 1: Aledo (Texas) (10-1) vs. Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas) (13-0) (5A Division 2 playoffs)

If one of these teams wins 5A Division 2 in Texas, they’ll have a good shot at finishing the year ranked. Aledo is the favorite. They beat Frisco 45-27 last week.

Aledo’s top player is senior wide receiver JoJo Earle, an Alabama signee.

Jan. 1: Crosby (Texas) (10-3) vs. Fort Bend (Missouri City, Texas) (12-0) (5A Division 2 playoffs)

Undefeated Fort Bend needs to keep winning to stay on the Power 25 periphery. Their two best players are 2021 safety Christian Jackson, an Incarnate Word signee and 2021 linebacker Kenny Seymour, a Rice signee. 2022 WR Chris Marshall is another name to know.

Jan. 1: Manvel (Texas) (9-1) vs. Cedar Park (Texas) (12-0) (5A Division 1 playoffs)

This game should be extremely close, with the winner staying on our Power 25 radar. Cedar Park QB Ryder Hernandez threw for 403 yards last week in a win over New Braunfels Canyon. He’s the x-factor in this one.

Jan. 2: DeSoto (Texas) (10-1) vs. No. 8 Duncanville (Texas), (9-1) (6A Division 1 playoffs)

These teams were supposed to meet in the regular season, but it got cancelled due to COVID-19. This matchup features plenty of star power. Overall, seven Duncanville seniors are ranked in the top 200 of 247Sports’ 2021 in state rankings. Offensive tackle Savion Byrd (Oklahoma signee) leads the way at No. 12.

DeSoto’s top player is 2021 DE Shemar Turner, a Texas A&M signee. The Eagles only loss on the year came against No. 22 Cedar Hill, 49-42 on Nov. 6.

Jan. 2: Rockwall-Heath (Texas) (11-2) vs. No. 22 Cedar Hill (Texas) (10-1) (6A Division 2 playoffs)

Rockwall-Heath shocked Bridgeland last week, winning 48-24, but the Hawks luck will most likely run out this week against Cedar Hill, a team that put up 545 yards of offense in their win over Tomball Memorial last week. Tennessee QB signee Kaidon Salter is Cedar Hill’s best player.

Jan. 2: Flour Bluff (Corpus Christi, Texas) (11-1) vs. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (Texas) (13-0) (5A Division 1 playoffs)

Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial won the regular season meeting between these two teams 34-17. With QB Carson Senterfitt leading the charge, expect the Eagles to win again to stay in the Power 25 discussion.

Jan. 2: Trinity (Euless, Texas) (11-1) vs. Carroll (Southlake, Texas) (10-1) (6A Division 1 playoffs)

Star 2022 QB Quinn Ewers (Ohio State) has Carroll rolling right now. Following after an early season loss to Rockwall, they’ve won nine in a row. If the Dragons keep winning, they’ll be a sure fire Power 25 team.

Jan. 2: Liberty Hill (Texas) (11-0) vs. Pioneer (Mission, Texas) (8-0) (5A Division 2 playoffs)

While both of these teams likely won’t make the Power 25, they’re both undefeated and still alive in Texas. A state championship would certainly warrant Power 25 consideration, so Liberty Hill and Pioneer both make the list. Pioneer senior QB Eddie Lee Marburger has thrown 30 TD passes in 2020.
