Who is the best high school boys basketball player in Southern California over the past 20 years? Over the next two weeks we’ll give you a chance to decide.
Our 32-player bracket tipped off Tuesday with first-round matchups in the Ed Azzam region, then moved to the Gary McKnight region on Wednesday, followed by the Harvey Kitani region on Thursday.
The first round wraps up on Friday with matchups in the NBA region (every player in this region went on to play in the league). In the fourth and final matchup, San Diego Horizon’s Jared Dudley, a five seed, takes on Price’s Allen Crabbe, a four seed.
Here’s a look at the matchup:
(5) Jared Dudley, Horizon (San Diego)
Dudley averaged 23.2 points and 14.0 rebounds per game as a senior at Horizon earning All-State honors. He captured 2002-03 San Diego Section Player of the Year honors from the Union-Tribune newspaper. He was also Cal-Hi Sports magazine’s 2002-03 state Division IV Player of the Year. Dudley led the Panthers to back-to-back Division IV San Diego Section and State titles (2002 and 2003) registering 16 points and 14 rebounds against Hercules in the 2003 state title game from Sacramento’s Arco Arena.
Dudley went on to play for four years at Boston College leading the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament each season and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2006. Dudley was drafted 22nd overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. He now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.
(4) Allen Crabbe, Price
Crabbe, the 2010 Gatorade State Player of the Year and Los Angeles Times Player of the Year, averaged 23.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as a senior at Price. In the Southern Section Division 4AA championship game, Crabbe scored 22 points to lead the Knights to a narrow victory over Orange Luthern 73-70, their second straight section title. In his junior season, Crabbe helped Price win the CIF Southern Section Div. VI title over Chaminade 76-69.
Crabbe played college basketball at Cal and led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. He was drafted 31st overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but then traded to the Portland Trailblazers on draft night.
