San Diego Prep Football Insider: Top performers from the 2019 season

Every week during the 2019 football season, Scorebook Live California reporter Bodie De Silva highlighted the top performers and the most intriguing storylines in San Diego Section high school football. This is the last Insider post of the 2019 season.

Notable Results

The high school football season in California came to an end this past weekend and both teams from San Diego still in action saw their hopes of a state championship come up just short. El Camino’s six-game winning streak was ended by Cardinal Newman as the Wildcats offense was held under 28 points for the first time since week ten of the regular season, which coincided with their last loss.

La Jolla had a similar result as El Camino. The Vikings traveled up to Escalon HS and had a tough time containing the Cougars who were able to score in each quarter on their way to a 52-21 victory. The Vikings entered having won eight of their last nine games but couldn’t get things going in the state championship. La Jolla returns several key underclassmen on both sides of the ball that should make next season exciting as well.

Top Performers From 2019 Season

It’s been well documented, but Bishop’s quarterback Tyler Buchner put together as statistically impressive a season as San Diego has ever seen. Returning from a season ending injury as a sophomore, the Notre Dame commit had 53 touchdown passes to only six interceptions during the year to go along with 1,610 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.

Playing in the smaller divisions over the past couple seasons has caused Orange Glen running back Cael Patterson to fly largely under the radar. Patterson ran for 2,643 yards and 31 touchdowns this season and finished his career 5,655 career rushing yards and 74 total touchdowns.

After playing on the varsity team for his entire career, Ke’ontae Springs was able to save the best for last during his final season at Madison. Taking over in the lead role this season, Springs was able to amass 2,003 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. Springs also threw two touchdowns and caught two touchdowns.

It was a resurgent year for Oceanside, with the Pirates bouncing back to grab a division one championship after a few tough seasons. Junior running back Kavika Tua has been a huge reason for the success. He rushed for 2,166 yards this season and had 24 total touchdowns and looks to be atop the short list of top players in the county next season.

After a solid junior season, Mt. Miguel receiver Jahiem Allen-Pompey was able to breakout and post arguably the best season by a receiver in San Diego history. Allen-Pompey caught 110 passes this season including 16 against West Hills and 17 against Del Norte in back-to-back games. His 2,074 receiving yards are a section record and he also caught 23 touchdown passes.
