Every week during the 2019 football season, Scorebook Live California reporter Bodie De Silva highlights the top performers and the most intriguing storylines in San Diego Section high school football.
El Camino faced the unenviable task of slowing down Tyler Buchner in Friday’s division two championship. Buchner and the Knights had their way early, leading 45-20 at the half. The Wildcats found their running game in the 2nd half and were able to get enough defensive stops against a thin Bishop’s roster. Sophomore quarterback Kiah Reid showcased the skills that the county will become accustomed to starting next year with the five touchdown passes he threw in the win. The Wildcats will be hosting Temecula Valley on Saturday night as they look to grab their first state playoff win in school history after losing to Crenshaw in 2017.
Serra made a statement on Friday when they took down Santana for the division four section championship. The Conquistadors led 12-7 at halftime before exploding for 25 unanswered points in the 2nd half. Serra made it a priority to run the ball and did so for 282 yards. Quarterback Timmy Zebroksi had three of the Conquistadors six rushing touchdowns and also added 131 yards in the air. Serra will travel to El Monte on Friday to play in their first ever state playoff appearance.
Serra’s dominant performance over Santana featured several standouts. Running back Brevin Lingao ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Serra continued their dominant defensive stretch with Broock Desta grabbing an interception, Keoni Lamoreaux forcing a fumble and the team combining for eleven sacks with Malachi Cooper leading the way with three.
Tyler Buchner’s effort in the division two championship already has many thinking back to the last time they’d seen such a performance on the big stage. The Notre Dame commit was 22/46 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 18 times for 353 yards and five touchdowns. Buchner finished his season with a staggering 6,084 total yards.
The freshman duo of Chris Williams and Chris White have gotten better as the season has gone on and helped Parker redeem themselves with a win in the division five section championship. Williams had eight tackles, forced a fumble, and returned two kickoffs for a total of 56 yards. White ran for 47 yards and caught two passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
