SBLive’s Arkansas Top 25: Conway moves up after win at Bentonville

By Nate Olson

Conway pulled off a mild upset by winning at Bentonville last week. As a result, the Wampus Cats move up from No. 9 to No. 8, and the Tigers drop from No. 6 to No. 9.

Fayetteville was the only other team in the Top 10 to lose and stays at No. 7 with the narrow defeat at Owasso, Okla. — the No. 1-ranked SBLive Top 25 team in Oklahoma.

1. Bryant (2-0)

After back-to-back blowouts of Benton and Marion, the Hornets are tuned up for a showdown with Longview (Texas) next week.

2. North Little Rock (1-0)

The Wildcats looked more than worthy of their ranking in a lopsided win against Har-Ber on Friday night. A Top 10 showdown at Fayetteville awaits this Friday.

3. Pulaski Academy (2-0)

PA’s challenging nonconference state continues with a trip to Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.), which is coached by former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer.

4. Greenwood (2-0)

After a slim win against Fort Smith Southside, the Bulldogs travel to Fort Smith Northside and will try to slow its potent run attack.

5. Cabot (2-0)

Cabot coach Scott Reed welcomes El Dorado, his former team, looking for his second straight win over the Wildcats.

6. Shiloh Christian (2-0)

The Saints haven’t lost since playing at Sand Springs, Okla., last year, a loss they hope to avenge in Springdale on Friday night.

7. Fayetteville (1-1)

The Bulldogs passed one test against Conway in the 7A-Central and now will tackle No. 2-ranked North Little Rock.

8. Conway

The Wampus Cats forced six Bentonville turnovers on their way to a mild upset and now ride that momentum into a home tilt with Class 6A Jonesboro.

9. Bentonville (1-1)

The Tigers’ tough nonconference slate continues with a home game against Missouri power Rockhurst, which is reeling after close losses to juggernaut Raymore-Peculiar and Park Hill the past two weeks.

10. Lake Hamilton (1-0)

The Class 6A Wolves rolled past Class 5A rival Lakeside in Week Zero and now take on Class 4A opponent Malvern this week.

11. Little Rock Christian (2-0)

The Warriors play at Magnolia seeking to avenge a 59-42 loss a season ago.

12. Bentonville West (1-1)

The Wolverines could enter conference play on a two-game win streak after hosting struggling Little Rock Central this week.

13. Har-Ber (0-2)

The Wildcats have a week to lick their wounds to prepare for Fort Smith Northside next week.

14. Benton (0-1)

It’s been a yearly ritual for Benton to lose badly to Bryant and then rebound. That starts this week with a home tilt against Little Rock Southwest.

15. El Dorado (1-0)

The Wildcats face a tall order in traveling to Cabot to take on former coach Scott Reed’s Panthers, who have devoured two fellow 6A-East Conference programs the past two weeks.

16. FS Northside (1-0)

The Grizzlies’ could smell blood after their rival, Fort Smith Southside, who they beat in Week 1, hung with No. 4 Greenwood, Northside’s opponent this week.

17. Harrison (2-0)

The Goblins try to avenge a shocking loss to Siloam Springs last year, Harrison’s only regular-season loss since 2017.

18. Jonesboro (1-1)

The Hurricane’s 7A-Central road tour continues with Conway, which pulled off one of the biggest wins of the young season last week at Bentonville.

19.  LR Catholic (0-2)

The Rockets are off this week after losing 40-34 in three overtimes to Fort Worth (Texas) Nolan Catholic at The Star (The Dallas Cowboys’ practice complex) last week and will go for their first win of the season next week at Benton.

20. Wynne (1-1)

The Yellowjackets, who travel to Morrilton this week, are an eyelash away from having beaten two 6A-East Conference schools after dominating West Memphis last Friday. Wynne travels to Morrilton this week.

21. Stuttgart (2-0)

The Ricebirds smacked Warren 36-0 last season, but it will be surprising if it isn’t a closer game at Bradley County on Friday.

22. Harding Academy (1-1)

After narrowly losing to Class 5A Valley View in a game that was scheduled last week due to COVID-19, the Wildcats travel to Heber Springs to play the Panthers, who Harding Academy has beaten seven of the past 12 meetings.

23. Warren (0-1)

Last year’s blowout loss at Stuttgart was an anomaly, as the Lumberjacks have won 11 of the past 13 games in the series since 2000.

24. Joe T. Robinson (1-1)

Class 4A Robinson has split with highly regarded Class 5A teams to start the season and now steps up two classes to play at Marion.

25. Fordyce (1-0)

Class 3A Camden Harmony Grove has the Redbugs’ attention after blowing out fellow 8-2A foe Junction City 39-0 two weeks ago, and Fordyce might have to battle the Hornets without quarterback Trey Meritt, who has been injured since late in the season opener.
