Every week during the 2020 football season, SBLive Arkansas will rank the top high school football teams in every classification.
Here are the 2A rankings as compiled by SBLive reporters Connor Morrissette and Lance Smith.
1. Fordyce (2-0)
The defending 2A champion is as scary as ever right now. The Redbugs narrowly got it done in a one-point victory in their season opener against Rison, but now they’re in midseason form after routing 3A heavyweight Harmony Grove 62-13. For reference, the Redbugs beat Harmony Grove 46-22 in their second game last season and finished 13-2 en route to the title.
It also would be a repeat of last year’s pre-league calendar if Fordyce wins its third game of the season against Monticello (2-0). Monticello is clearly formidable after blowing out Lakeside and edging Bauxite but will be a major underdog against the team to beat in 2A.
2. Junction City (2-1)
Speaking of Harmony Grove, the Dragons have rebounded well after losing 20-14 to the Cardinals in their season opener. After blowing out Smackover, they beat Foreman comfortably last week. Junction City is expected to move to 3-1 this week against 0-3 England.
3. Gurdon (1-1)
Even with just a 1-1 record, Gurdon already looks the part of a contender. The Go-Devils nearly knocked off one of 3A’s best teams in Prescott, and last week they shut out Bearden 33-0. The Go-Devils very likely will move above .500 on Friday against Mineral Springs, which has won two games but most recently lost to Bearden.
4. Des Arc (3-0)
So far, Des Arc has routed everyone in its path. This week, the Eagles will face Earle, which could be a playoff preview and Des Arc’s first big test.
5. Poyen (3-0)
There is very little separation between second and fifth in 2A, as Poyen is yet another team that appears ready to contend for a title run. Poyen has outscored its opponents 124-20 and will be the favorite again this week against Murfreesboro.
