Top 10 small school (2A, 3A) Arkansas high school football games of the week

Here is an inside look at the top small school (2A, 3A) high school football games across the state of Arkansas this week.

TOP 10 SMALL SCHOOL GAMES TO WATCH

10. Lamar (1-0) vs. Gentry (0-1)

After a tough loss last week against Waldron, Gentry looks to get in the win column in Week 2. They do so against another 2A playoff team, Lamar, who is coming off a nice win against Huntsville.

9. Magnet Cove (1-0) vs. Bismarck (1-0)

Magnet Cove is on the hunt for a deep 2A postseason run this season, and has the pieces to take that leap. Week 2 presents another opportunity to make a statement after a nice win against Murfreesboro. The Lions are coming off a clutch victory against Cutter-Morning Star themselves, and need more good wins to make it back to the 3A playoffs.

8. Hoxie (1-0) vs. Mountain View (1-0)

These two incumbent 3A playoff teams looked strong on offense in Week 1 victories, and seek repeat performances in Week 2.

7. McGehee (0-0) vs. DeWitt (0-0)

Opening their seasons against each other are reigning 3A quarterfinalist McGehee and DeWitt, who won a 4A playoff game last year. DeWitt returns some strong individual talent but lost the majority of their playoff core, making this a great opportunity for McGehee to go for a statement win.

6. Booneville (1-0) vs. Ozark (0-0)

Booneville turned heads last week in a 35-14 victory over Dardanelle. They’ll be major underdogs this week against 4A heavyweight Ozark, but if the Hillbillies need time to shake off rust, Booneville could push them and put all of 3A on notice.

5. Greenland (0-0) vs. Elkins (1-0)

Elkins smoked Lincoln 46-8 to start their season, so 3A playoff contender Greenland will have their hands full in their season opener.

4. Des Arc (1-0) vs. McCrory (1-0)

Week 2 has likely playoff implications for these two 2A teams with major postseason aspirations. Des Arc blew out Palestine-Wheatley last week, and McCrory won a nice defensive battle over Hazen, so look for both squads to try to make a statement.

3. Prescott (0-0) vs. Gurdon (0-0)

This one consists of two reigning semifinalists with hopes of going even further this season. Prescott (3A) and Gurdon (2A) are both in great shape on paper to take that next step and see the championship game this season, and their first chances to show it are against each other on Friday.

2. Glen Rose (0-0) vs. Malvern (1-0)

Potential 3A heavyweight Glen Rose kicks the year off on Friday against hometown foe Malvern, who is coming off an impressive victory against Sheridan. Malvern held Sheridan to six points in a defensive duel, and should present an exciting test for the Beavers.

1. Harmony Grove (1-0) vs. Fordyce (1-0)

Here we have two division championship contenders coming off of narrow victories over strong foes. Reigning 3A semifinalist Harmony Grove beat reigning 2A finalist Junction City by six points last week, and wants to prove that they are a serious threat to go even further this year. This week they’ll have the chance to do so against the team that beat Junction City last year in those 2A finals – Fordyce, who is a heavy favorite to repeat.

As for Fordyce, the Redbugs won an exciting 29-28 battle last week against another 3A contender in Rison. They’re the clear favorite on paper, but there’s a good chance this one comes down to the wire, making it our easy pick for the lower-division game of the week.
