Salpointe Catholic WR Antonio Martinez voted the WaFd Bank Arizona High School Athlete of the Week

Congratulations to Salpointe Catholic wide receiver Antonio Martinez for being voted SBLive’s WaFd Bank Arizona High School Athlete of the Week for Nov. 29-Dec. 5!

The senior had a critical pick-six in the second half of the game to give Salpointe Catholic the lead and help flip the momentum back in the Lancers’ favor in their 29-17 win against Desert Edge.

Martinez received 24.24% of the vote, beating out Horizon’s Wesley Lambert who finished second with 18.18%. Chaparral’s Brayten Silbor finished third with 15.15% and Hamilton’s Nicco Marchiol finished fourth with 12.12%

Here are the other athletes who were nominated for the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 5:

Devon Dampier, Junior, Saguaro – Dampier did it all on Saturday night for the Sabercats, helping them stun the Hamilton Huskies in a 31-24 win. Dampier completed 5 of his 8 pass attempts for 95 yards and one interception, but he also was the team’s rushing leader in the game, going for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 16 plays. 

Gage Dayley, Senior, Highland – In Friday’s 28-14 win over Red Mountain, Dayley became the program’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns. Dayley completed 9 of his 16 pass attempts for 218 yards, two touchdowns and one interception to help Highland secure consecutive championship game appearances. 

Jack Freeburg, Sophomore, Desert Mountain – Despite the 28-24 loss to Horizon on Friday, Freeburg had an outstanding night, with five receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns. 

Wesley Lambert, Junior, Horizon – Helping Horizon to a come-from-behind 28-24 victory over Desert Mountain, Lambert rushed for 209 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. 

Nicco Marchiol, Senior, Hamilton – It was a crushing 31-24 loss on Saturday for the Hamilton Huskies, but Marchiol finished his high school career strong. He completed 15 of his 21 pass attempts for 200 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 70 yards on eight runs. 

Riley Nolan, Senior, Poston Butte – Holding things down on the defense, Nolan was a playmaker for the Broncos in their 41-20 win over Glendale. Nolan recorded nine total tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception. 

Brayten Silbor, Senior, Chaparral – With a second half for the ages, Silbor helped power the offense forward to a 35-28 win over Williams Field, with 21 of the Firebirds’  points coming in the fourth quarter. Silbor completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 356 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions to help Chaparral return to the championship game.
