SBLive Arizona Top 25: This week’s 25 teams that have our attention in Arizona high school football

By Brittany Bowyer

This week’s Top 25 teams that have our attention in Arizona high school football …

1. Chandler Wolves (6-0)

After a bye last week, Chandler gets back into action this week against the Queen Creek Bulldogs, who are looking quite vicious this year. Chandler will look to remain undefeated, but the Bulldogs will be their toughest in-state game this season. This very well could be the biggest game of the week.

2. Hamilton Huskies (7-0)

The Huskies continued to keep things rolling with a blowout win over Desert Vista last week. This week, Hamilton will be on a bye before returning to action next week against Highland.

3. Basha Bears (7-0)

With a sophomore quarterback, Basha has all the potential in the world to keep building on this season’s success. Up to this point, the Bears have looked absolutely dominant on the field, but they’ll also be put to the test this week when they clash with the Highland Hawks in another can’t-miss matchup.

4. Queen Creek Bulldogs (6-0)

Queen Creek made a statement last Friday with a 26-21 road win over Liberty, and the Bulldogs will be looking to send more shockwaves across the state this Friday when they face Chandler.

5. Horizon Huskies (6-0)

To some people’s surprise, the Huskies are undefeated under new head coach Andy Litten. They’ll face a strong Saguaro Sabercats team Friday with a lot of newly eligible players. It will be quite a test for the Horizon defense to step up and stop the Sabercats, but a win would almost certainly solidify a spot in the open division bracket.

6. Cactus Cobras (6-0)

Offensively, the Cobras look like they cannot be stopped, as they mangled the Greenway Demons last week, 46-0. While the score is a statement enough in itself, it also reflects the offense’s fewest points in a game this season. They’ll take on Northwest Christian this Friday, and the Cobras should be able to roll to 7-0.

7. Highland Hawks (6-0)

As mentioned above, Highland will be put to the test when it comes to stopping Basha’s explosive offense. Quarterback Demond Williams has looked outstanding, and the Bears’ defense has been producing good results on the field. Expect this to also be a game that draws a number of eyes.

8. Saguaro Sabercats (5-1)

It hasn’t necessarily been the most typical year for Saguaro, but with transfer standouts like Deric English newly eligible, the Sabercats’ firepower just went up an extra kick. Horizon has slowly but surely been chopping away at the schedule, making its way through opponents week by week, with the mentality here no different than before. Expect this to be another exciting game with big implications pending on the results.

9. Red Mountain Mountain Lions (6-1)

Red Mountain kept the party rolling last week with a win over the Desert Ridge Jaguars. While it might not have been the highest-scoring game, the Mountain Lions were able to do what they needed to get the job done and pull out the win. This week they’ll travel to Skyline, where Red Mountain should be able to pick up another win.

10. Liberty Lions (4-2)

At the start of the season, it appeared this could be the most talented Liberty team ever, and while the Lions have accumulated a couple of losses, the potential to make a run at another 6A state title is very real. This week, the Lions return to action on the road at Chaparral, a team that has proven itself to be tricky to prepare for.

11. Casa Grande Cougars (7-0)

Senior quarterback Angel Flores has done wonders in helping to put the Cougars on the map, and once again the team will have the opportunity to make a run at the 4A state title. With Cactus almost certainly a lock for the Open Division and Mesquite seemingly out of the picture, Casa Grande is in a nice spot leading up to this week’s game at Walden Grove.

12. Mountain View Toros (6-1)

The Toros might not have played a big-time opponent in Mica Mountain last week, but make no mistake that a Pat Nugent-coached team will still go out there and compete. The Toros were able to take the win over the Thunderbolts on the road, and this week they’ll prepare to take on battle-tested Mountain Pointe.

13. Desert Edge (5-2)

While Desert Edge might not be in the race for the Open Division, things are still wide open in the race for the 5A title. After defeating Ironwood last week, Desert Edge has a bye this Friday before getting back to action at home against Sunrise Mountain.

14. Chaparral Firebirds (4-3)

Chaparral might have played the hardest schedule of anyone in the state to this point. Although they dropped last week’s game to Brophy in a 28-27 heartbreaker, the Firebirds still have the possibility to repeat as 6A state champions. They are back in action this week against Liberty in another absolutely massive game for playoff rankings.

15. Salpointe Catholic Lancers (4-2)

The Lancers seemed to find a new source of offensive spark last week in the game against Desert View, when Salpointe Catholic was able to hand the Jaguars their first loss of the season. This week, the Lancers are preparing to take on a struggling Cholla team, and they should be able to take the win.

16. Snowflake Lobos (7-1)

Snowflake cruised past the Winslow Bulldogs last week, shutting them out 55-0. The Lobos are in first place in the 3A East. This week, they’ll prepare for another big game at Round Valley in a quest to keep building toward the postseason.

17. Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions (5-2)

The Mountain Lions have a number of huge wins this year, but last Friday just wasn’t their night, falling to Boulder Creek. This week, Mountain Ridge will travel to Valley Vista in hopes of picking up a much-needed conference win.

18. Desert View Jaguars (5-1)

Few people envisioned Desert View starting the season 5-0. On Friday, a highly motivated Salpointe Catholic team handed the Jaguars their first loss, effectively bumping them out of the Open Division rankings. This week, the Jaguars will look to bounce back when they play Mountain View – Marana.

19. Deer Valley (5-1)

After getting off to a hot start, the Skyhawks suffered their first loss last week, to Buckeye. Deer Valley will face another tough test this week when the Lake Havasu Knights come to town.

20. Willcox Cowboys (7-0)

While COVID tried to hold the Cowboys back, this team just can’t be stopped. After being forced to cancel their game against Pima two weeks ago, the Cowboys answered with a huge win against Bisbee last week. In their quest to continue having their best season in ages, the Cowboys will take on the Morenci Wildcats on the road this week in what will likely be a gritty game.

21. Trevor G. Browne Bruins (6-1)

For the Bruins, this season has been part of a historic turnaround for the program. It’s rare for inner-city football programs to see a turnaround with success in such a short time frame, but Browne is proof it’s possible. This week, TGB is on a bye, but the Bruins will look to make it 7-1 when they return next week against North.

22. ALA Queen Creek Patriots (6-1)

Their lone loss coming at the hands of the Saguaro Sabercats in a close game, the Patriots could certainly be a dark horse contender for the 4A title. This week, ALA Queen Creek will travel to Thunderbird with eyes on the postseason prize.

23. Show Low Cougars (7-1)

Making a statement with a 61-8 victory over Payson last week, the Cougars are looking to close the season on a high note. With just two games remaining, it’s going to be a tough test for them, as they host Blue Ridge this week before closing things out on the road against Snowflake.

24. Marana Tigers (5-1)

In another big southern Arizona matchup last week, the Tigers were able to sneak past the Sunnyside Blue Devils, 36-35. This week, they will prepare to take on Rincon/University in a game they should be able to win as they look toward the final stretch of the regular season.

25. Williams Field Blackhawks (4-2)

While it hasn’t been as dominant of a season for the Williams Field Blackhawks, they’re still a tough and talented team with a lot of potential to make some noise. This week, the Blackhawks will take on Corona del Sol, which could prove to be an interesting clash.
