This week’s Top 25 teams that have our attention in Arizona high school football …
1. Chandler Wolves (6-0)
Chandler remains undefeated after a 49-3 win over Perry on Friday. This week, the Wolves are on a bye before preparing to return to action next week against a rising Queen Creek team on the road.
2. Hamilton Huskies (6-0)
Narrowly edging Chaparral on Friday 35-32, the Huskies also remain undefeated as they look toward the thick of their schedule. They will look to continue climbing with a dominant win over Desert Vista this week.
3. Basha Bears (6-0)
The Bears are off to a hot start this season and will look to extend their win streak with a game against a 4-2 Mountain Pointe team under the Thursday Night Lights. Led by sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr., the Bears’ future is continuing to look bright.
4. Horizon Huskies (5-0)
Each week continues to bring more excitement for the Huskies as they continue to surpass all expectations prior to the season and continue their climb toward the top. Horizon most recently defeated Apollo on Thursday 58-21 and will travel to 3-2 Gilbert on Friday.
5. Queen Creek Bulldogs (5-0)
Making a serious case for an Open Eight bid, the Queen Creek Bulldogs are still undefeated after holding Casteel scoreless to advance to 5-0 on the season. This week, the Bulldogs will travel to take on the Liberty Lions in what could end up being the battle of the week.
6. Cactus Cobras (6-0)
Cactus continues to plow through 4A and 5A conference teams at the midway point in the season and will have another big game against 4-1 Greenway this week, a sneaky yet strong team the Cobras can’t overlook.
7. Highland Hawks (5-0)
After making it to the program’s first state championship game last year, the Hawks are campaigning for a return following a 14-7 victory over Sandra Day O’Connor on Friday. Highland will look to go 6-0 this week when it travels to Perry this weekend.
8. Liberty Lions (4-1)
After suffering a tough loss to Chandler early on, the Lions will look for a big statement win with a victory over Queen Creek.
9. Casa Grande Cougars (6a-0)
Casa Grande looks to be the only other 4A team that could give Cactus a run for its money, and the Cougars will look to remain undefeated this week when they host Sahuaro on Friday.
10. Chaparral Firebirds (4-2)
Chaparral put up quite a fight against the powerhouse Hamilton Huskies but couldn’t close things out, dropping Friday’s game 35-32. This week, Chaparral will look to rebound with a win against Brophy on the road Friday.
11. Red Mountain Mountain Lions (5-1)
Red Mountain had a strong performance against rival Mountain View on Friday, defeating the unbeaten Toros 20-3. This week, Red Mountain will travel to Desert Ridge in hopes of securing a spot in the playoffs.
12. Saguaro Sabercats (4-1)
In Friday’s game against Maricopa, the Sabercats looked dominant as they cruised to an easy 69-7 victory and a 4-1 record. This week, Saguaro will look to continue climbing toward the top when it hosts Sierra Canyon of California in a huge cross-state battle.
13. Desert View Jaguars (5-0)
After most of Tucson was shut down last year, little was expected out of the teams down south. However, nobody has surprised people more than the Desert View Jaguars, who have prowled their way to a 5-0 start on the season. This week, they’ll have the opportunity to make a statement win over historically dominant Salpointe Catholic.
14. Mountain View Toros (4-1)
The Toros were handed their first loss of the season at the hands of their rivals over at Red Mountain on Friday. This week, Mountain View has a bye before getting things back on track next week against Mountain Pointe.
15. Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions (5-1)
Mountain Ridge has won five consecutive games following their blowout loss to Liberty in Week 1. Most recently, the Mountain Lions stomped La Joya 77-12, and they’ll look to continue their winning streak when they host Boulder Creek in a sectional game Friday.
16. Snowflake Lobos (6-1)
Following a huge 52-17 victory over Payson last week, the Lobos will look to continue rolling in the right direction when they host Winslow in what will likely be a tough matchup.
17. Deer Valley Skyhawks (5-0)
Off to their best start in ages, the Skyhawks are soaring to new heights under junior quarterback Rudy Gonzales. Deer Valley will look to keep climbing in the 4A rankings as they get toward the back end of the schedule, with a Thursday game against Buckeye this week.
18. Desert Edge Scorpions (4-2)
Cactus was able to get sweet victory last week, handing Desert Edge their second loss of the season. This week, the Scorpions will be looking to make a statement in their game against Ironwood.
19. Salpointe Catholic Lancers (3-2)
It was a tough few weeks for the Lancers, who were handed back-to-back losses by Saguaro and Pinnacle after a strong start to the season. This week, Salpointe Catholic will look to get things back on the rails, but it’s going to be another big test in Desert View, which is undefeated.
20. Willcox Cowboys (6-0)
Willcox is undergoing issues with COVID, as it’s hitting the rural farm area hard. A breakout within the team sickened a number of players, causing last week’s game against Pima to be canceled.
21. Trevor G. Browne (5-1)
The Bruins are continuing their transformation into an entirely new team, as Trevor G. Browne is off to its best start in decades. After shutting out Copper Canyon last week, the Bruins will look to continue the intensity in this Friday’s game against Westview.
22. ALA – Queen Creek (5-1)
Currently sitting in the top spot in the Desert Sky Region, the Patriots will look to continue solidifying their spot as one of the top 4A teams as they take on Marcos de Niza this Friday.
23. Show Low Cougars (6-1)
Round Valley was able to hand Show Low its first loss of the season, shaking things up a bit in the Division. This week, Show Low will look to evade any additional losses and make up some ground when it plays Payson.
24. Marana Tigers (4-1)
The Tigers suffered their first loss in a battle with still undefeated Desert View last Thursday, but don’t expect them to stay in the loss column. The Tigers will have the chance to come roaring back in this Friday’s game against Sunnyside.
25. Centennial Coyotes (3-3)
Things are finally starting to get back on track. While the three losses look bad, they were also to some of the top teams in the state, giving the Coyotes a bit of wiggle room when it comes to the playoffs. This week, the Coyotes travel to Pinnacle, which just pulled off a huge road win over Salpointe Catholic.
